five.
three years ago, i met ellis. his hair was longer and his skin was tanned, he was also thinner.
we were fourteen, he was five months away from turning fifteen, while i was seven months away. my hair was lighter and much shorter, i was inches shorter and paler.
ellis played soccer a lot, he was part of the team. girls would swoon over him -i was one of them, though he didn't bother much about it. he would rather spend most of his time reading books and listening to music.
he was a quiet boy, but with lots of friends. he would smile and laugh a lot, but words would only seldom leave his lips. some thought he was quite mysterious -the kind of mysterious that's adorable and cute.
but i think that he would only choose to speak when he has something appropriate to say.
but here's how ellis and i really met:
on a cold crisp tuesday afternoon, i sat alone in the library. school was finished for the day and everyone was enjoying the rest of the day elsewhere.
the only ones in the library was me, the librarian -ms. michaelson, finn, who is a book addict and two seniors -a boy and a girl- who was fighting over which book was better.
i sat in the middle of the library, where the air conditioner hits colder. my book rested on the table as i my head rested on my hand. it was quiet, before i heard the chair in front of me screech. i looked up, my chest was banging, my head was exploding, my eyes widened. everything in me just accelerated.
there in front of me, was my crush ever since sixth grade. his brown shaggy hair covered his forehead, almost touching his eyes. his grey sweater fitting him perfectly, his slightly tanned skin glowing, his red cheeks still as red as ever. ellis lanes was in front of me.
he smiled slightly with an apologetic look for making the chair screech. he sat down slowly, placed his bag down the space on the floor and laid a book on the table. he sat across me, and i was staring at him.
ellis gave me yet another adorable dimpled smile and flipped his book open. i was still staring at him, my mouth ajar. i think he felt me staring because ellis took out a small piece of paper and pen, wrote something on it then slid it in front of me.
it wrote:
'i can feel you staring. :) just continue reading, don't mind me.'then i quickly folded the note, carefully hid it inside my pocket then brought my attention back to my book.
thirty minutes later, ellis stood up and gave me a wave. he picked his things up and said, "see you." then he pushed back the chair and left.
i smiled. a real happy genuine kind of smile that felt like watching a star shoot across the sky.
that was my first real encounter with ellis. the memory was still so fresh in my head that i could still remember the small details.
today was friday, i was writing a new letter to ellis. today was a special day, today was the same day i had my first encounter with ellis, the same day he confessed and the same day he asked me out. i wrote it all in the letter too.
after finishing the letter, i tucked it inside my bag then headed off to the park.
ellis' brown hair was already in sight. he was facing the other side as i walked towards the bench.
as i sat down a few spaces beside him, ellis had a small smile and was looking forward.
"hi." i said offering him a grin.
he snapped out of his thoughts and looked at me, still with a smile. "hi."
"great day?" i asked.
ellis nodded. "very."
it was silent for a moment, i was playing with the edge of the letter inside my bag.
then ellis spoke again. "i think i like this girl." he said with admiration in his voice.
"who is she?"
he was grinning. "her name is delilah." he told me. my heart dropped. "she's very nice and sweet and she's really pretty."
i felt my eyes sting but held it in. i faked a smile. "she sounds lovely."
"she really is." i looked down at my bag that's resting on my lap. "i'm ellis by the way. it was nice meeting you -" he paused.
"fleur."
he nodded, "fleur." ellis checked the watch on his risk then turned back to me with an apologetic look. "i'm sorry but i really have to go." he stood up, waved then left.
when ellis was out of sight, the tears fell down in a second. my body was shaking and my hands felt cold.
"happy anniversary." i whispered to myself.
