Sie/her

Frankfurt, Germany

February 13,1939

"I will always be more athletic than you, no matter how long you are in Hitler Youth, Luke!" I yell as I climb higher and higher into the leafless tree.

Luke and I were currently racing each other up a tree, to see who would get to the highest point without getting the least bit scared. And let me tell you, this was one big tree. The biggest in all of Frankfurt, in fact!

"Birgitta!" Luke yelled.

"Stop trying to stall, I'm going to beat you!" I said, without even looking down at him.

Only another branch and I would be at the top!

"I win!" I yell as I turn to sit on the branch.

"That's no fair, you were kicking snow in my face!" Luke pouted.

I just shrugged and looked at the view. I could see all the brick homes, our school building, even the catholic cathedral!

When I'm done looking at the view I snap back to reality. I see Luke already climbing done the high tree. That's when I notice just how high.

"Uh...Luke?"

" Yes, Birgitta?" Luke say, as he gets to the bottom.

"This tree is kind of high." I state.

He gave me a 'duh' look. "Why do you think we raced to the top? You said you wanted the highest tree." He yelled.

I groan.

He looks at me for a moment, then begins to randomly laugh.

"What's so funny?" I ask

"You're not scared, are you?" He says in between his laugh.

I just stare at him. He begins to laugh harder. "You are, aren't you!"

"What if I am?" I yell

"You know, I could help you." He says as he rubs his chin.

"You better, verlierer!" I yell.

'Or I could just leave you here. If only for calling me that mean name." He says in a babyish voice.

"Luke, please don't leave." I say, trying not to sound to desperate. Which I was.

" What do I get in return?" He asks

"LUKE!"

"Guttentag, Birgitta." he says as he turns around, beginning to walk away.

"WAIT!" I yell, now not caring if I sounded desperate.

"Yes?" he say, as he turns around.

"I'll give you my dessert rations for a week!"

"Only a week?" He says. " Sorry that's not gonna cut it!" He turns around.

"2 weeks?"

"Nope!" He says, still walking away.

" A MONTH?!" He stops a turns.

" A month AND a week!" He says with a smirk.

"LUKE!"

"BIRGITTA" He mimicked.

I stared at him, debating whether of not if I should take that deal.

'Bye, Birgitta."

"Fine, Luke, fine! A month and a week." I yell.
