Sie/her

June 15,1942

Frankfurt, Germany

"Say neugierig." Opa instructs.

I ponder it for a moment.

'Inquisitive?" I answer.

Opa laughs, "Very good!" he beams.

I smile.

"You know, Birgitta. I have nothing left to teach you."

"Oh Opa, you still have much to teach me!" I argue.

" Birgitta, you have been studying for almost three years. I, myself, no nothing else."

" Thank you so much, Opa, for teaching me." I smiled.

"It was my pleasure." He says laughing, as he engulfs me in a hug.

"Birgitta, do you not have to go to the shop today?" Opa questioned me.

My eyes widen, "Oh no, I'm late! Frau Schneider is going to kill me!" I yell as I frantically try to put on my shoes. Opa chuckles, eyes shinning.

"I'll be home in time for dinner." I say as I close the door.

I run down the cobblestone, attempting to reach Frau Schneider's store. Just another block and a half, I mumble to myself.

I turn the corner at the end of the block. I walk down half this block, as I see the brick stone to my left.

I open the door, breathing in the familiar scent of peppermint tea. "Birgitta!" Frau Schneider says.

" I am so sorry I'm late. I just lost-"

"It's alright, Birgitta. Just come and help me finish Frau Weber's dress. We most have it done by this evening." Frau Schneider says.

"Coming Frau Schneider!" I say hanging my coat on the hook.

Frau Schneider was a seamstress and her store was in the center of Frankfurt. She was a kind old woman, in her late sixties early seventies. Her husband died 15 years previously during The Great War. She opened the shop just after he died because she had no way of supporting herself, and her business was going very well. But about 2 years ago, she hired me saying she was too old to do the work alone. We also needed the money after mama died and Opa was getting to old to work. After all, he is almost 86.

"Please bring me the blue silk, Birgitta." She said, pushing her dirty blond hair from her face, as she sat in her stool beginning to work.

I rush to the small cabinet, where Frau Schneider kept all her materials. I browse through the material for a moment, until I eventually find the blue silk. I take it off the rack and hand it to Frau Schneider.

I then go to get my small sowing box and make my was towards the open stool by Frau Schneider.

As I sit down and begin to the hem of the dress. We work in silence until Frau Schneider begins to be her normal chatty self and strike up a conversation.

"How are you, Birgitta? How is your love life?" she asks, chuckling to herself.

"What love life?" I sigh.

"Ahh, come on, a pretty girl like you not having a love life? With your dark blond hair and sparkling hazel eyes, boys should be lining up! " She exclaims, poking a pin into the dress.

" What boys, Frau Schneider? They are all obsessed with themselves or the government to even care about me!" I say.

"It can't be that bad!" She says with her thick German accent.
