Frankfurt,GermanyI squint as the sun rays hit my sleepy eyes. Morning again. I yawn as I toss my legs over the side of my small bed and put on my robe.
I walk out of my room and down my wooden steps into my small kitchen. I grab a glass and a pitcher of water and sit my the table, trying my best to keep my eyes open. As I pour the water I begin to get two plates so I can begin a small breakfast for my mysterious guest and I.
It has been three days since I helped him escape from the guards. I was right when predicting that the guards would be looking for him once they saw his body was not in the plane. They had two options to believe. One, he jumped once he realized the plane was crashing. And two, someone hid him.
The next day they came searching all the homes in Frankfurt. I wasn't sure what I should do with the man. I thought maybe I should turn him in, say he broke into my home. I hardly knew anything about the man other than his name was Ashton.
But, all those thoughts disappeared when I began to think of Luke. What if he was in trouble and some enemy woman helped him. That was my only reason for hiding him.
My father was a wise man when they were building our home. He created a small room, under the floorboards of the kitchen, that of ever in an emergency we would have somewhere to hide. So that is where I put the man when the soldiers came and searched my home.
Since that day, I have spoken very little to Ashton. We are both on edge with each other, still not sure of we can trust one another.
I suddenly hear two taps coming from below the floorboards. I tap my foot twice in return and then reach down and pull the rug up that was hiding the trapped door. The trapdoor begins to open and I see some curly peaces of hair pop out.
Ashton looks around, making sure the coast was clear, then hoping out of the little area. As he closes the door, I greet him with a "good morning.".
He smiles and says "Good morning."
"How did you sleep?" I ask as I begin pouring his food into his plate.
" Alright. Better than in the B.A.S.E. At least here I don't have a really big threat of mosquitoes." he giggles.
I chuckle. He sits on a chair by the table and slightly tips over the plate with the food.
"What is this?" He asks curiously.
"Sauerbraten" I say simply. He looks at me wonderstruck until I explain. " It is beef and cabbage. If you did or didn't know, we are on rations and we are in a food shortage." I say slightly harsh.
Ashton just looks away.
" So... Birgitta, tell me about yourself." He says, possibly trying to make conversation.
I stop what I am doing and look at him. If he thinks I am going to talk about myself first then he is dead wrong. He seemed to get the message with my look and begins talking about himself.
" Um... I have a sister and a brother." He says, looking at the closed shade by the door.
" What are their names?" I ask, as I sit on the chair.
" Lauren and Harry." He smiles. " I also have a mum, as well." He continues.
"Do you have a father?" I question.
He suddenly tenses and doesn't meet my gaze.
" We don't talk about him."
I look away too, knowing how he feels since my father died was I was young.
