He tap’s his fingers nervously, waiting for a miracle. His eyes were red from the tears, his hair messy from waking up 3 hours ago and rushing here. His face felt dry from the dried tears that stained his cheeks and chin. Everything went through his mind, from what if she can’t make it? What if she makes it, but is in a coma? He closes his eyes real tight, blocking tears and trying to go to a different place in his mind, then he remembers her.

“I am so sorry!” she says, wiping her coffee he just spilt on his shirt. “So very sorry.” She was in a rush to meet her friend for lunch at the local café down the road. She’s told him before she doesn’t like the coffee at the café, so she brought her own from her home.

“It’s fine.” He says, trying to help her clean up his shirt. “I’ve been meaning to give that one up anyway. Guess it’s going to the trash now.” That made her smile just a little bit. She told him her name, he told her his. He walked her to the café, said his goodbyes and gave him her number. “Promise me you won’t spill coffee on me next time, alright love?” he said. She nodded, and he walked off while his heart fluttered.

Hid mind snapped back to reality, and the nurse stood next to him.

“Mr. Howell. She wants to see you,” she said softly. Her words filled with hurt, almost like she didn’t want to have to say that to him. He stood up, feeling his legs shake with every step into the hospital room. He wasn’t nervous, anxious, or tired. He was scared. Scared of losing her.

The room was white, bright and quiet. All to hear was a soft beeping of the heart monitor. All to see was her, lying very still on her bed. Her eyes fluttered, and her chest rose slowly up and down. He pulls a chair up to her bed, next to her. She carefully looks over at him, and smiles lightly. He notices her eyes are red too. She has been crying, just like him.

“I’m so sorry…” she whispers. He shakes his head and bites his lip while he looks at the ground. “Don’t say that. Don’t you dare say your goodbyes. You can’t leave me now. We’ve only been together for 2 years. We are just starting. We were going to get married, have two kids. Remember? You had their names picked out and everything. Please! You have to make it. I don’t want to and I can’t lose you.” He said, his voice shaking more and more with every sentence he said. He kissed her hand wiped her tears but let his fall to the ground.

“Dan, We all have to go at sometime. I guess my turn tonight.” She said with her soft voice, just like an angel she was about to become. He shook his head once again, “You can’t…I don’t want you to go.” She cupped his head in her hands, using all the strength she had left in her body, making him look up at her. “I don’t want to go either. The cancer got the best of me. It’s time for me to fly away.” She kissed his lips lightly, then let go. “You’ll find another girl, someone very lucky to be with a guy like you.” The heart monitor changed, and they both knew what was going to happen next. He hugged her close and his tears flooded her shoulder. “I love you, my princess.” He held her even tighter and he felt her tears on his upper back as well. “I love you too, Dan, so very much.” She took one last big breath. “And don’t worry, we’ll meet again fairly soon.” Her eyes fluttered, locking her green eyes in forever. She took a tiny breath and whispered, “Goodbye, my sunshine.”

Minutes passed, and he finally lay her back down. His tears were still flowing, as he remembers the last words she said. Sunshine is what she called him, because during her 6 months of pain and suffering he was the one to make her smile, and make her feel better day after day. Her grey skies, made better with his help. He walked towards the door, looking back at her and smiling, remembering the good times. “Goodnight princess.” He whispered before walking out the door, leaving her one last time. The nurse at the desk nodded at him, “I’m very sorry sir.” He tried to hide back some of the tears, “She’s in a better place now, right?” The nurse nodded, “Have a good night.” He nodded, “You too.”

He got in the car and tried to relax. He hit the steering wheel with his hand. “Dammit!” He yelled, covering his face with his hands and letting out all his tears. He sat that way for about 20 minutes before driving home. All he could think about was her.

They lay on a little blanket in the park, hands intertwined with each others. They gaze up at the stars, and she breaks the silence.

“Dan?” she says softly. “Yes Y/N?” “What are you scared of?” she asks, looking deep in his brown eyes. “Well, spiders, and losing you of course.” She smiles, and kisses him deeply. He kisses back, and wishes it would never end.

He remembers their first fight, and how stupid he was. It was only over the fact that she forgot his birthday once, and he had a small attitude all day.

“Dan, I can’t do this anymore.” She says as she bursts out the door. She stands out in the rain for a minute before he follows her.

“Y/N! We can work this out. I was so stupid and I’m sorry! I didn’t need to have an attitude and I know it!” He says, taking her hand. She rejects it and she starts to say something. “Dan, that-“ she was interrupted by his lips colliding with his, and her fingers intertwining. Kissing in the rain, just as she always wanted.

Dan is taken back to reality when he hits the cold and new December ice. His tires spin and he loses control. He hears a crash and everything is black. He is woken by sirens in the distance. His heart hurts, and he’s barely breathing. His car is a wreck and the windshield is smashed. Glass covers his face, along with blood and tears. “I’ll be there soon…” he whispers one more time, before closing his eyes.

He opens his eyes and finds himself in bed, safe and sound. He rolls over and sees her, un-hurt and safe. Her green eyes shine like emeralds once again. He smiles and lets a tear fall, she wipes it and he tells her everything. “Your safe now…” she says kissing his nose. “Worse nightmare ever…” he says, falling back asleep.
