Since Blacky was a baby, he never had a house. He and his family were like nomads, renting different houses. He didn’t usually go outside except when he was going to school. Sometimes, he didn't like to watch TV because he said that he will just see those well-off people with good physique and unscarred faces…making himself feel unhappy why he didn’t live a life like them. Since then, he never grew close to his parents. He never had close friends, not even a best friend. He always thought that best friends destroy things. He told me that if I make one mistake, all my secrets will be revealed.

After our classes, Blacky invited me to go to the park across our school. We sat near a statue. We talked while drinking blood orange juice. While I was sipping my drink, he spoke. I showed my wondering face. He told me, “I live with my uncle for now. My father is trying to find another job. I never heard anything about my mother...at least I try not to listen.”

I opened my mouth, juice dripping on the side of my mouth. Quickly wiped it and continuously opened my mouth while in a state of shock. He was now the same with those other families who have parents that are separated. He belonged to a broken family.

Blacky continued: “Maybe it doesn't have to be that way at all...maybe. What triggered us to be like this? I don't know about you, but since before...until now, I always wondered why does everything have to be this way? I don't want to regret by not saying things I want to say. So, I want to say something now. I think it's kinda good to appreciate everything. May it be good or bad...everything that happened to you...the events molded you to become who you are right now. We can't control destiny. No worries! Everyone dies in the end, right?”

I was S-P-E-E-C-H-L-E-S-S! Parts of what he said…I didn’t understand. Parts of what he said…I couldn’t answer. (How should I react?)
