(A.N. So, this has been changed up a lot in the past few weeks, to the point where I can actually write about it. Also, the style I'm using is so much easier for me, so, there's that. Anyways, this seemed like a decent idea, and it wasn't a more or less direct copy and paste of the game. :3)

Asgore had to give up everything, all because some monsters were selfish enough to give up their powers just so they didn't have to do their jobs. Because of them, the entire world was thrown into chaos. To avoid the worst of it, Asgore sealed the remaining monsters underground. Fast forward a thousand years, and monsters are still trapped.

What's worse is that all the irresponsible people that gave up their powers have transformed into beings who are much more sinister. Humans roam the surface, destroying everything beautiful.

Asgore is tired of bowing his head. They stole everything, and continue to do so. He had to do something. That something turned out to be his Guardians, an elite group, even more powerful than his royal guard, and comprised of the strongest monsters around. Naturally, Undyne, Mettaton, and Grillby were his first choices, but it couldn't just be three Guardians. He needed more. Thankfully, because of Grillby, he met two skeletons. They were both powerful, albeit one of them was a tad too lazy.

Still, five is a very small number, and while Asgore does manage to recruit more people, it'll never be enough to rival the humans, whose physical bodies have become far more formidable than expected, mostly thanks to the chaos in the world.

There was almost no hope for the Guardians. After escaping the underground, they had planned to destroy every human in their path, but it was impossible. They were far too strong. Every fight ended with the monsters gravely injured. The costs seemed to keep mounting up, until every soldier was either broken, or dead.

Well, almost all of them, anyway. Nothing ever seemed to get under Papyrus's skin. And, while Sans May have been broken, he hid it well.

Asgore couldn't stand to watch his army, his Guardians, his friends, continue to suffer. He did the only thing he could. Over the thousand years, he'd been amassing power, all for the sake of killing humans. But, he was never on the front lines. No one would let him. There was only one choice left to him.

He split his power up, bestowing each Guardian a particular ability. If they were going to be called Guardians, they needed something to safeguard.

Papyrus was the first to gain his new power, and it was one of the most extraordinary. Dreams. It fit him well.

To Asgore's son, Asriel, went the power of Hope. It could change the Very course of the war. An army without hope of winning is guaranteed to loose.

However, all of that came second to Undyne's Victory. She safeguard the ability to win, and the army only grew stronger because of it.

Grillby need nothing from Asgore. He already had power over fire. What more could he ask for.

One after another, Guardians obtained new abilities that bolstered their strength tenfold.

Finally, it came to Sans. By that time, Asgore had weakened considerably, but not enough to deny Sans a gift. And so, Sans became the Guardian of Souls. No one knew what it meant, nor the gravity of his power.

As proof of their roles, Asgore gave each of them a symbol, which they all wore proudly, as they defeated humans, suffering fewer casualties each time. That was, until Asriel, who had rushed into battle recklessly, was killed. Queen Toriel, enraged, joined the fight, but she was no match for the humans.

Without their Queen and prince, the monsters fell into an almost comatose state. All except for Papyrus. His power allowed him to keep believing in the future, even if their beacon of hope was gone. Because of him, monsters were able to regain themselves. They were able to keep fighting.

Eventually, they were able to wipe out all but a small group of people. It was so minuscule, the monsters thought there was no way for them to lose. Sans even led the charge, something he'd never done before.

It was down to the last human. There was absolutely no way for them to lose. Of course, that was under normal circumstances. Just as the last human took their last breath, something strange happened. Sans was suddenly back underground, before the Guardians had been formed, before the monsters had reached the surface, before the humans were exterminated. Everything had been reset.

However, not everything was normal. Sans still had his ability. What he could do with it, he had no idea, but he had plenty of time to figure it out.

Or, at least, that's what he thought. That's not exactly what happened. The human that had rewound time also remembered, and they weren't going to wait around for the monsters. Instead, they took a knife, and began slaughtering everyone underground. It wasn't until they encountered Sans that they had any trouble. The two fought, and the human reset every time they died. Eventually, Sans grew impatient. He was tired of fighting constantly, for seemingly years on end.

He did something, something he had no idea he could do, or even how he did it. His ability allowed him to rip the very soul of the human from their body. As it appeared, Sans noticed the yellow coloring, an obvious indication of Justice. Just as he was about to absorb it, the human's voice pleaded for mercy. They were only killing the monsters because they didn't want to watch their friends die again. It was the only way, they claimed.

Sans didn't care. Their reasons didn't matter to him. All he wanted was revenge for Papyrus. And so, he absorbed the soul, merging it with his own. However, in a last ditch effort, the human did something. They shattered their own soul. That's what they tried to do, anyway.

Sans wasn't sure how it happened. One moment, he was standing in a hall of gold. The next, he was suddenly surrounded by darkness. He couldn't make sense of where he was. It was all too weird. Stranger still was the seven doors that lay in front of him. One seemed to be faded and glitching every so often.
