I cringe as I open my eyes to familiar blinding light. I look around through blurry vision, failing to collect my surroundings.

"Hey, dim those lights," I hear a hushed voice followed by the shuffling of feet. Then, the light above me becomes less painful to withstand.

"Call another nurse, quick," I hear another, almost frantic, voice. Still trying to put together my surroundings, I try to speak.

"Where..." I croak before my voice cuts out.

"Aphmau, I need you to stay calm. You are safe, you're just in intensive care," I hear a soothing, familiar voice.

"Why?" I manage. Then I see a familiar face step into view. It's Alina.

"It... it's a lot to explain. We just need to get you stable before we explain everything," she says. She looks behind her, and backs up before a nurse walks up to me. She checks my vitals monitor, and then looks at Alina. They share a worried expression. I know Alina is already a nurse... why do they need a second opinion?

"What?" I ask, expecting an answer. Alina turns to me and hesitates. I feel my heart rate rise with panic. "What's wrong with me?" I ask through several voice cracks. Alina looks at my monitor with a panicked expression and turns to me.

"No, no it's okay. You're okay," she soothes.

"But you said I'm not stable. And you're freaking out over my vitals. I've been to the hospital before, I know I'm not okay," I push with a slightly raised voice. Then I realize my heart beating out of my chest from panic and confusion.

"Aph, please, I need you to calm down. Okay, yes, you're not in the best condition. I will explain once I feel safe with your vitals," she says frantically, alternating her gaze from me to the monitor.

What is so bad about my vitals?

Deciding to follow her instructions, I take a few deep breaths as I feel my heart rate go back down. Alina takes a deep breath, her panicked expression going back to a focused one.

"Okay. We just need to do a few things before we can stop watching you like hawks. Just so you know, because of your current situation, there will always be someone outside your door. If anything happens, just yell," she instructs. I nod my head.

"As for the explanation, we will get to that. For now, I need to go," she adds. She walks up to me, and gives me a gentle hug. "I'll be back in a bit."

After she leaves, the nurses do their thing. As they are working, I look over and see my phone on the table next to my bed. Alina must have put it there. As the nurses prepare my right arm for a little shot, I use my left arm to pick up my phone. I used to be terrified of shots, but after being in the hospital so often, I don't really feel them much.

I turn on my phone to be welcomed by my almost unfamiliar lock screen. It feels like I haven't opened my phone in forever. I take in every detail, trying to put together the last time I saw it. A ton of missed calls and texts. I will have to get back to everyone soon, I'm guessing they can't visit me in intensive care. 3:16 PM. Dang, already used up over half of my day asleep. Friday, May 3rd. That's kinda funny. I guess technology always has its glitches. Its April, silly phone. April 24th, to be exact. I remember writing the date in my diary.

"Okay, all done," one of the nurses chimes. She looks at my monitor, and then back at me. "You are stable for now, just take it easy."

I give her a smile and a 'thankyou'. She goes off to another side of the room to the sink while the other nurse heads out the door. I turn back to my phone to deal with all of the missed calls and stuff.
