"Aaron... I have to go," I say as I fail to choke back tears.
"Okay... okay I love you," Aaron says.
"I love you too."
I end the call just before my phone slips from my grasp. The sharp pain in my chest is sending blunt panic through my body, causing me to drown in different sensations.
Along with every painful pound of my heart, a wave of static and darkness washes over my vision. Proceeding and then receding like the shoreline of a beach.
But as the pain becomes more dull and distant, the darkness becomes more real.
I'm fainting.
I close my eyes to make the process easier and faster.
"Aphmau." was the last thing I heard.
"Aphmau."
What?
"Aphmau."
My eyes open, causing my senses to jolt me completely awake. The only thing I can see is a blinding light.
My head is pounding.
I cower away from the light before it flickers off.
"Aphmau," a familiar voice says. "Aphmau, you've been asleep for a while, just relax."
I close my eyes again. I'm tired of this. Waking up suddenly, not knowing where I am, and then being told to relax. Like it's really that easy.
"You had a small little episode a few days ago, no big deal."
I sigh.
"Alina, if it's no big deal, why was I unconscious for multiple days?" I ask dryly.
"Oh honey, my name is Rachelle. And your little episode was nothing unexpected. Your heart is under a lot of stress, after all."
My eyes shoot open. My eyes adjust, and I study the face in front of me.
"Where's Alina?" I ask.
"She's running late today," the woman says as she turns her head to someone behind her.
"What do you mean?" I ask. Alina is never late.
The woman named Rachelle turns her attention back to me.
"She just hasn't come in yet." She studies my expression. "I wouldn't worry about it, hun. She's been cutting it close the past few days, and she's seemed a little on edge. She's just dealing with something."
This woman really doesn't seemed worried about it.
I relax my now tense muscles, letting out a deep breath. Then I realize how tired my body is.
"I know I must sound crazy, but I feel exhausted. You guys do what you gotta do, but once you're done, is it okay if I rest for a little?" I ask. Rachelle smiles.
"Ofcorse, I understand. I just need you to eat first, someone is bringing that now. And I need to actually measure your weight real quick. I don't know if you've noticed, but it looks like you've lost quite a bit of weight since you got here. We just need to check up on that, so we can take care of it if needed," she explains.
I know I've been dropping pounds, and my appetite has gone down quite a bit. It hasn't occurred to me as a problem until now.
Rachelle places a hand on my back to help me up. Placing my hands on the bed, I swing my legs over and onto the floor. Rachelle stands up with me, and my back pops from the lack of movement. The weight on my legs feels unfamiliar.
