Catherine Schuyler kissed Elizabeth's head. "Goodnight, sweetheart! I love you," she said softly. Elizabeth smiled, closing her eyes. Catherine smiled lovingly before heading out of the room, closing it in a gentle manner. Eliza could hear her mother saying goodnight to her younger sister Peggy from her younger sister's room.
Elizabeth smiled, pretending to be asleep. 'I can catch him! My monster.. I hear him at night. I know he's watching over me! I saw him once, he had pretty dark hair. Mom told me about them a week ago. Apparently with each human born, a monster is born to protect them! That's so cool! Though, if they protect us, why are they called monsters? I think they're nice!' Elizabeth stopped when she heard a rustling noise. The young girl gripped her flashlight, eager to catch her 'monster.' 'That's him! Okay, Eliza! Three.. two... one!'
Eliza jolted up from her bed, turning on her flashlight and pointing it at her monster. The light shined on him, making the monster squeak. "I got you!" Elizabeth whispered happily. She then shivered in the cold room, frowning slightly before replacing it with a victorious and joyous smirk.
"Elizabeth.. you aren't supposed to.." the monster looked at Elizabeth, wonder and curiosity in his eyes. "I've never seen you up close. My name's Alexander! You can.. you can call me Alex, though. You're really pretty, and you have a nice singing voice!" the monster gushed. He looked like a normal boy, just with elongated claws, a tail, and ears. "I shifted into a form you won't be scared by.." he shyly whispered, looking away.
The nine year old girl giggled quietly, getting up and walking over to him. "Can I touch your ears and tail?" she asked him. Alex nodded, and Eliza brushed her fingers over Alexander's ears delicately, singing quietly since he likes her singing. The boy shivered lightly, nuzzling into her touch. The girl giggled, petting Alex like a small puppy. He didn't mind, though. It made Eliza happy, and that was the only reason he existed, really. "I like you, Alex." Eliza said gently, looking at the boy. "I don't know why you're called a monster.. you're sweet and you protect me! Your voice is really sweet to my ears.. and you are so soft!"
Alexander laughed, face pink. "Thanks.. Eliza. You're really nice.. Some of us aren't that lucky," he mumbled. Eliza gave him a questioning look, and he frowned. "My brother.. James.. His human found him. James explained that he was to help him! The human didn't care," Alex choked out, tears brimming in his eyes. "His human drowned him in the bathtub.. now I have no brother!" he squeaked out, tears falling down his face. "His human is unprotected now, too. They'll get hurt.. Ugh! He killed my brother and I'm worried about him! This is stupid!" he hissed softly, angrily. Alexander huffed and wiped his tears away.
Eliza felt sorry for him, and wrapped Alexander in a hug. The two shivered together. It was a really cold January night. "You get cold, too? Oh my goodness! You must have been freezing!" she said, eyes wide. Alexander shyly nodded, pulling away to wrap his arms around himself. "Come to bed with me, Alex! We can cuddle and keep warm together!"
"Eliza.. is that okay? Mommy always said to not cuddle with girls.. unless they're your girlfriend." he whispered the last part to himself, but Eliza heard it. She giggled, pulling Alexander to bed with her, the boy falling quietly on her baby blue bed.
"I can be your secret girlfriend, then! At night we can talk and cuddle, and during the day you can keep me safe! I like talking to you, Alex!" she beamed, pulling the covers over both of them. Alex' face flushed, and he snuggled into Eliza's side.
"Okay Eliza.. you know.. your bed is really soft," he whispered. Eliza nodded, wrapping an arm around Alex, who smiled softly at her. "Goodnight, Elizabeth," he gently cooed. Eliza smiled, too tired to give him a response.
Eliza woke up, not ready for the first day of her Sophomore year of High School. She looked up at the ceiling and winked, hearing a tiny laughter from inside the ceiling. The girl missed her boyfriend's warmth, frowning lightly as she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.
A tiny letter laid on her nightstand, the paper a shimmering gold. Eliza's eyes widened, knowing that this came from her love. She knew he had loved to write, but he's never written anything for her! She opened it gently, fearing it may break or tear. The words were written in a glimmering black.. Eliza gasped at the care and time put into this.. So elegantly Alexander must have written this for her.
"Immediately after dinner, I stole from a crowd of company to a solitary walk to be at leisure to think of you, and I have just returned to tell you by an express this moment going off that I have been doing so. You are certainly a little sorceress and have bewitched me, for you have made me disrelish every thing that used to please me, and have rendered me as restless and unsatisfied with all about me, as if I was the inhabitant of another world, and had nothing in common with this. I must in spite of myself become an inconstant to detach myself from you, for as it now stands I love you more than I ought—more than is consistent with my peace..."
Eliza squealed quietly, hugging the love letter to her chest. "Alexander! Your writing is phenomenal! And the fact that this is for me.. Oh my goodness, I love you, Alexander! I always have and I always will. You're not a monster who protects me.. you're an angel," she whispered, happy tears in her eyes.
Alexander watched from the ceiling as Elizabeth praised his work, the man smiling softly. His heart fluttered at the sight of her, and he knew he would never let anyone hurt her. He loved her with all of his heart. "I love you too, Betsy," Alexander whispered to himself, face pink.
