I was lying in bed trying to get to sleep, but I could only lye still for a minute before getting frustratingly bored and rolling over to the other side. I eventually rolled on my back and sighed. I knew exactly what was keeping me up and knew I wasn’t going to get a wink of sleep without doing something, so I picked up my phone and found the number I wanted. I hit the ring button and waited for a reply.
“Anna? What’s wrong?” Derek’s voice said sounding worried, but it was clear I had woken him up.
“Sorry, I woke you up. Of course I woke you up, it’s midnight. It can wait till the morning.” I went to hang up but he stopped me.
“It is morning and I’m listening.”
“I don’t really have anything for you to listen too…” I said, feeling like an idiot.
“Then why are you ringing me?” He asked, but I could tell he was smiling.
“I couldn’t sleep and… I want to hear it.”
I didn’t need to explain, he knew what I was talking about. “Now? You want to hear it now?”
“I wanted to hear it the other night, but I couldn’t bring myself to say that I did before sprinting out and turning into a wolf.”
I heard a light chuckle. “Okay, well I’ll start by saying I had no phone service for the first 2 and a half days and as soon as I got a few bars I tried to ring.”
“Tried to?”
“My finger was hovering over the button for about 5 minutes until I eventually rang Peter.”
“Peter?” I asked confused.
“I asked him what’d been going on. If anything bad had happened. Supernatural bad… and he said no. Kate and Peter, Jackson and Gerard, Jennifer and the alphas. In some way they were my fault, were after me, or connected to me. I left town and everything went back to normal and I wanted it to stay that way for you.”
“It didn’t go back, Derek.” I said in a small voice. “Stiles has been having nightmares, Scott started shifting at school, Allison’s been hallucinating about Kate, I’m a freaking homicidal mermaid,” I cringed at using the phrase myself, “and there are ninjas giving everyone hyperthermia, through no fault or connection to you.”
“Yes, well Peter failed to mention that.”
“I would have mentioned it if you rang me.” I whisper yelled through the phone, not wanting to wake anyone up. Which apparently didn’t work. There was a stumbling sound from the room next door. “Hang on a minute.” I added before Derek could say anything.
“Anna? What’s going on?”
“I think Stiles is awake, give me a minute.”
“He’ll fall back to sleep.” Derek said, clearly wanting to finish the conversation which was probably a first for him.
“No, he want. One minute.” I said again as I jumped out of bed and walked to Stiles’ room. I lightly knocked before entering. “Stiles?” I whispered as I pressed my phone to my chest. I could just see Stiles’ retreating figure jump through his window with one final look and smile at me before he did. It was all there in that smile. Something about it made my skin crawl and gave me Goosebumps. It wasn’t Stiles. “Stiles…” This time I said it more to myself in confusion. I slowly lifted my phone up to me ear. “Umm, Derek, I’m going to have to call you back, I’m sorry.” I didn’t wait for a reply before hanging up and sprinting downstairs and out the door after the Jeeps fast speed. I only made it a few paces before stopping and trying to ring his cell, but of course there was no reply. I quickly ran upstairs and traded my pyjama bottoms for tracksuit pants, leaving my plain grey shirt on and quickly chucking on my running shoes. I grabbed my keys and ran to my car.
