It was just another typical day at your bookshop in Brooklyn. It was a modest bookshop very well hidden in the streets of Brooklyn since you didn't want to draw too much attention. Mia, as usual, was organizing the books by genre on each shelve and clearing off the dust from the books and the wood at the same time. You, on the other hand, were distracted by reading and eyeing some comics in the science fiction section. Then you suddenly felt something slightly hard coming your way quickly, but thanks to your super speed and reflexes you stopped it with your magic by lifting your hand in the object's direction as dark purple magic surrounded your hand and the object. You lifted your head from the comics and looked at the floating book, then you saw Mia holding a laugh.

"What the hell Mia!" you said jokingly.

"Stop reading the comics and help me clean, y/n/n!" she ordered smiling. "I know it's not your favorite job but it has to be done, and I can't do it all by myself." she said, this time more seriously.

"Fine." you said while standing up.

You hated cleaning, but you knew you could solve the problem easily with your magic. But as you slowly closed your eyes to concentrate on your magic you heard Mia's voice warning you to stop.

"Y/n, don't." she warned. "You know you can't use too much magic. It will draw their attention."

You knew she was right, and you knew who she was talking about. Hydra. But it wasn't just them, there were so many people out there including the Avengers who knew about you and your skills, but not about your magic, only Hydra knew that about you. Secret associations knew you were a master assassin with insane abilities due to Hydra's experiments on you, and after you escaped Hydra, people kept kidnapping you to use you for their own problems. You were able to keep escaping every time but you knew you couldn't keep living like this. That's when you found Mia, and everything changed.

It had been around 10 months since you escaped Hydra, but the memories were still vibrant and fresh. You started remembering everything Hydra put you through, all their painful experiments, your forced missions, when they kept beating you up until you passed out. Pain and suffering was all you knew, you never had a childhood apart from living in the streets and who knows where and who your parents were. Your eyes started watering but before you let any tears roll down your face you shook your head in a motivating manner and smiled at Mia.

"You're right, I'm sorry, I'll help you out with one condition." you said, raising up your index finger.

"What?" Mia asked.

"I'm putting on music that I like!" you leaned down to turn on your old radiocasete as the song "I want you back" from Jackson 5 started playing. (you had a very similar taste in music to Peter Quill). You started dancing around while clearing off some dust and lifting up books (this time without magic), and singing to the song. Mia laughed as she watched you dance and rolled her eyes before she started cleaning again. "Whatever, just make sure the store looks presentable before any clients show up" she said while cleaning.

You were happy. You finally started feeling like you belonged somewhere and didn't have a constant fear of being kidnapped. Sure, that was still very likely and you had to be careful, but you weren't alone, you had Mia and that was all you needed. She made you feel happy and safe, she was like an older sister to you. You had felt sad and scared for so long that you doubted you'd ever know what happiness felt like, you still didn't have the perfect life but you were getting there and that was enough to keep you going.

You finally cleaned up the whole shop right before the clock hit 9:00 am, when you let yourself fall backwards on the couch and looked upwards, feeling tired as hell. Mia sat next to you with a serious expression on her face, you looked at her confused. "What?" you asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Well no, you just made me clean the whole shop without using my magic, so I feel pretty tired, duh." you joked, but Mia still had a serious expression.

"I'm being serious y/n, you hide it well but I know when something is bothering you." she stated.

"Actually, I'm better than ever. I've finally started feeling happy and like I have somewhere I belong in."

"You belong in a crappy bookshop?" Mia asked as a smirk formed on her face.

"Nooo" you laughed. "I feel happy because of you, Mia. Since you found me you made my life easier, but not just practically, but emotionally as well. I see you as an older sister I never had, someone I can tell anything to and will still understand. I can't thank you enough for bringing me into your life after everything that's happened." you gave her a sad but grateful smile, as tears started rolling down your cheeks.

"Hey, you don't need to thank me. We both went through horrible shit, but that's over, now we just have to be careful that nobody finds us, and if they do, you know what to do. But don't ever forget that we're in this together." she pulled you close and hugged you tightly.

You broke the hug as you heard someone entered the bookshop. You wiped off your tears, went behind the cashier desk, and you looked up to see who entered the shop. That's when you saw them and your face turned pale.
