FrancineIt's the unexpected that changes our lives.
It has been two days after my parents were arrested and Colby, Sam and Elton were now aware of my situation. Colby stayed by my side while I was explaining everything to Sam and Elton and I was grateful for that. His support gave me comfort and assurance that it was okay to speak up.
Another thing that I was grateful for was their reaction. They didn't pity me, no, they were angry at my parents and they had that desire to help me gain my freedom. Elton did give me some scolding about the fact that I waited until I was on the brink of my death before finally speaking up but he was simply worried about me like an older brother.
"Good morning, Francine." Logan greeted as he and Marie enter my recovery room. "How are you feeling?"
I smiled at the couple. "I'm getting better, both physically and mentally."
"Sweetie, that's great!" Marie gleefully said.
"I agree. That's a great development." Logan said before sending me a teasing grin. "Ever since you met those kids in that abandoned mall, you have been more open... And you've been spending a lot of time with that Colby boy."
I felt my cheeks grow warmer at his teasing, causing the couple to laugh at my obvious reaction.
"Oh, I see." Marie teased while wearing a grin similar to her husband.
"Marie, not you too." I groaned and tried to hide my face on a pillow. The two simply laughed at my lack of response to the topic but they simply left it there. My guess is that they already have ideas on my thoughts about Colby.
"Okay, we'll leave that subject for later." Logan said. Suddenly, the atmosphere turned from cheerful and friendly to serious. "Actually, we're here to talk about the case against John and Cassidy Lockhart."
I slowly lowered the pillow on my lap and my smile immediately dropped. My attitude did not go unnoticed.
"France, I know that you don't want this to happen but if we don't do anything to stop them, they are just going to hurt you even more." He explained.
"...I know, Logan. I guess I was just clinging to the hope that one day, they will love me more than their money just like in the past. But after putting me in the hospital with serious damage and still care about their image, I realized that out relationship will never be the same." Unknown to me, I had clenched my fists tightly to the point of digging my nails into my palm and drew a bit of blood. My hands were cold. The thought of letting go of my hope of having a happy family felt heavy to me, yet my eyes refused to shed even a single tear for them.
Marie sat at the edge of the hospital bed and wrapped my cold clenched fists into her gentle warm hands. "We found a great lawyer who's willing to help you."
Logan came closer and stood behind his wife. "You're going to be surprised but we also have witnesses who are willing to help you, France."
My eyebrows furrowed at the mention of witnesses. I understand if they got Colby to be my witness since he personally went through the torture of watching me got beaten black and blue but other than him, I don't know who else would be going as my witness, especially since they were going against my parents. "Witnesses? Not just Colby?"
The corners of their lips twitched when I mentioned his name but they kept a serious face on and kept their thoughts to themselves, saving them for later, probably.
"Yes, sweetheart. Would you like to meet them?"
My eyes widened. "They're outside?"
"Yes, along with the lawyer. They didn't want to overwhelm you so we wanted to ask you first." That was very thoughtful of them.
Hesitantly, I nodded and Logan immediately opened the door, letting six people in to the room. I sat on my hospital bed while staring at the people who entered in surprise.
Colby was there, as expected.
Doctor Claire was there, probably for my medical records.
Penny, my mother's assistant, was smiling towards me apologetically.
And three more unfamiliar faces.
"Penny?" I muttered.
"I'm really sorry, Francine. I knew what they were doing to you but I couldn't do anything." She said remorsefully and refused to look at me in the eye.
Logan noticed that I was still a bit shocked and decided to simply introduce me to the three other people. "Francine, these three here are a family of lawyers. Mr. Kenneth and Ms. Julianne Henderson and this is their son." Logan gestured to the three to move closer to my bed.
"It's great to see you getting better, miss Francine." Lawyer Kenneth said as he shook my hand. Lawyer Julianne simply offered me a gently smile and shook my hand before letting their son introduce himself.
However, instead of introducing himself, he simply stared and studied me with his aquamarine eyes that scarily reminded me of my father's and mine. In fact, he look exactly like a male version of me.

...
...
No way.
"Do you... still remember me?" His deep voice sent shivers down my spine. Memories of the past started resurfacing and my tears started falling.
"...you..." I couldn't say anything else as I simply watched him stand in front of me as he watched me cry.
