Tiredness weighed over us, we had been walking all night and crossed around two or three of the abandoned buildings, no Becca and no Alex anywhere.
We continued on hope alone, that's what kept us going. As we trudged through the snow further, our pants soaked with snow, our boots holding rivers inside of them, we began to shiver, giving into the unbearable cold that surrounded us.
My stomach let out a low and deep growl."damn man." Derek announced, Groaning I reached into my pack, grabbing some jerky, offering some to Derek he took it graciously.
"We'll find them, they have to be okay, they are the stubbornness people on the planet after all." Derek said causing me to let out a short laugh in response. He was in fact true, they were so stubborn that no one could ever get them to do anything they didn't want too, even if they were as insistent as a speeding train coming at you a hundred miles an hour.We slugged a little further when a huff from behind me sent me shooting my head back.
"Dar, we got company..." I announced looking to the bear that stood on its hind legs, staring me down.
" Really? What is it?" Derek asked turning he dropped the jerky.
"We just have to back up slowly." Derek instructed, we both backed up and the near stood there staring, still, I gulped. We sauntered back , we got around twenty feet away when Derek yelled.
"Run!" we both turned on command and ran as fast as we could, I heard the bear's weight pressing in the snow behind us.
" ITS...WINTER...WHAT'S..THAT..THING...DOING...OUT..HERE?!" I yelled, my voice hoarse, Derek didn't answer, we raced to a cliff, stopping. Turning the Bear was still charging full speed toward us, I knew it we were dead.
" we gotta jump." Derek said and before I could react he jumped dragging me behind him.
We tumbled down the hill, almost like in the cartoons were the person would turn into a giant snowball except it wasn't that easy. When we finally stopped I could barely stand I was so dizzy. Derek puked beside him, when I looked around, there was a house-like structure...or more like three, but it looked like it was what we had been searching for.
"I see the next place, I say we go in look around and if they aren't there we take camp, I don't think I can walk any further today." I reasoned.
"Alright, then tonight we'll start for the next one." Derek analogized, getting up.
"Sounds good." I said as we headed to the building. Each step was a struggle, I didn't know we're I was going, and I'd fall almost every step. Eventually after ten minutes my vision came back and the world stopped spinning in loops.
There wasn't much of anything here, light shown through the broken windows, it had given the place a home like feeling, but as of now my home was filled with broken people, not broken things. A torn-up couch sat in the living room untouched, some appliances in the kitchen covered in dirt and some strange gewy substance I don't really want to discover the name of. In the rooms, there were old steel beds that would creak if you sat the wrong way on them with a fallen apart nightstand beside them, other than that the rooms sat empty. The bathroom was surprisingly clean for an abandoned building and the basement luckily had a furnace, perfect for heat. We threw the remnants of the nightstands in the furnace and dragged the beds to the basement.
"Maybe we'll go in the morning." Derek stated as he took off his boots.
"Maybe, we'll see how energized we are then." I agreed as we removed our wet clothing and traded them with the dry clothing from our packs allowing the heavy water-drown out fabric to be dried by the furnace."I wonder what's happening with them now?" I asked.
"They're probably eating breakfast somewhere." Derek answered, I nodded and layed down on the bed. We went to sleep to the sounds of the wood cracking from the flames.
