As the end of the day approached I couldn't help but feel excited. It was Friday and that meant the weekend was finally here. No school for two whole days. Relaxation was only an hour away.
After my last class of the day, the bell blared through the school signaling that the end of the day had come. I bolted up from my desk, grabbing my briefcase on the way out the door and I even did a little dance as I exited the school. Who knew the weekend would make me so happy. Those two days were well needed.
As I walked towards my bus stop I could hear the faint sound of groaning. I stopped in my tracks, turning around and becoming silent; waiting to see if I would hear the sound again. And just like I expected I heard the groaning sound again. I tiptoed to where I heard the sounds coming from, behind a big dusty green dumpster. I placed my hand over my nose as I made my way behind the dumpster.
In complete shock, I gasped when I saw a half conscious August slumped down behind the dumpster. His face was covered in blood and dark bruises, his clothes had been ripped and torn on his body. Almost immediately I reached down to lift him up from the ground. He placed his arm around my shoulder and I did a quick one to three count in order to brace myself from the heavy weight I had to carry.
"I gotta call 911," I said frantically.
"Nah," August moaned. "No hospital,".
I scoffed. "What do you mean no hospital, someone beat you up. Who did this to you?".
"I'm Iight, jus' leave meh here,".
I stared down at him, sighing as I pulled out my phone. His eyes were slowly closing.
I dialed Sean's number and in seconds he picked up.
"Sean I need you to pick me up from the school,".
"I'm not doing shit for you June," He spat.
"Sean please," I begged. "It's an emergency. Someone is hurt,".
I heard him sigh on the other end. "Give me 5,".
"Thank yo-,".
He hung up.
I placed my phone back into my suit jacket pocket and looked down at an half conscious August.
"You're gonna be okay," I whispered to him as I held him.
I glanced around at the empty school front.
Five minutes passed and just like Sean had said, he came swerving around the corner stopping abruptly in front of the school. I stood up, dragging August along with me. Sean hopped out his car and rushed over beside me, opening the back door then grabbing August from me and placing him in the back seat.
"Who is that and what happened to him?" Sean asked me.
"He's one of my students and I don't know I found him like this," I admitted as I got into the passenger seat.
Sean looked confused for a second but then he got into the driver's seat and drove off.
"Should we take him to the hospital?".
"He said he doesn't want to go to a hospital," I retorted.
"He doesn't want to go to a hospital? He's unconscious!" Sean panicked. "What if he's dead?".
"He's not dead he's still breathing," I said. "Just drop me off at my house and help me get him upstairs,".
"June you can't just bring one of your students to your house. You can get in trouble," Sean explained.
"Nobody knows he's my student....well unless you tell," I said.
"You know I wouldn't do that," Sean replied with much attitude.
