"Man I on't even know," I smirked before exhaling the cloudy smoke from my lips, passing the blunt over to Chris.
"What you mean you don't know? It's 1000 dollars.....cash....just to point a gun at one of them niggas," Chris responded as he stared back at me, his face hardening into a serious look.
"What bout Ma-,".
"You know I thought this through...May can stay with my mom again. She'll be sleep. Come on man I really need you on this one. Mijo stepped out at the last minute, and you know I wouldn't ask if I didn't really need your help. Please man," Chris begged.
I sighed deeply before reaching out for the blunt again. Chris handed it to me, letting me inhale the smoke again. I leaned my head back, watching the smoke in the air. I could feel my body becoming numb and less tense.
I coughed lightly before handing it back to him. "You lucky I'm high Nigga. I'll do it,".
Chris smiled brightly, standing up from his bed.
"Thanks man, I really appreciate this," He said.
I stood up too, slapping my hand against his familiarly.
"Ima head out, I'll meet ya back hea' at 11," I smiled as I backed towards the door, clumsily tripping on the carpet beneath my feet.
"Yo you good?" Chris asked, chuckling.
"Yea," I laughed as I opened his door and stepped out, May sat on the couch watching me intensely.
"You higher than life my nigga," Chris smirked.
"What ya put in dat? Ya got more of dat?" I asked, looking hazily at Chris.
He stepped back to grab something from his first drawer before returning back to face me. He slid a small baggy into the palm of my hand.
"That's on the house,".
"Thanks man," I grinned, before slipping the baggy into my back pocket. I walked towards May, signaling her to follow behind me. She stood up obediently and latched onto my hand. As we stepped out of Chris' building May finally spoke.
"Aug,".
"Huh?" I glanced down at her.
"I miss mommy,".
I sighed, bending down until I was her height. I looked deeply into her eyes, grasping her small shoulders.
"May look, Ima tell ya somethin' dat ya might not wanna hear righ' now," I sighed deeply. " Ma ain't comin' back fa a while,".
A couple tears drizzled down her rosy cheeks before she sniffed. I stood back up, pulling up my jeans a bit.
"Come on," I reached down, allowing her to grasp my hand again. It was a silent walk to our apartment and that's how it remained for the rest of the night.
Eleven o' clock seemed to come quicker than I expected. As I packed a CapriSun and a couple fruit snacks into May's backpack I noticed tears streaming down her cheeks silently. I groaned lowly before rubbing my hand over my face.
"May why ya still cryin'?".
"I just miss mommy," She whispered.
I decided to not respond because I simply didn't know what to say. I missed my mother too. But the truth was that I didn't know if she would ever come back. I was waiting. Just like May.
"Let's head out,".
As we stepped out into the dark night, and stepped into the bright lights illuminating the quiet yet menacing streets I shifted into my hard demeanor.
