"We made a pretty good team. I must say that is one pretty gal." A man said. My gaze locked on the little girl I just took away from her mother seconds after her birth. Regrets filled my senses.
"When you said "we're only gonna scare them for what they did" I didn't know you meant, take a life and a child." My nephew added.
"I didn't know what I was doing. I just blanked out. As soon as I saw her. I just lost it." Self hatred consumed my entire being as I looked at the infant girl wrapped in a jacket that was covered in dried blood and the umbilical cord still attached.
I felt disgusted with myself.I looked at my nephew who just got off the phone walking up to me.
"We can't take her to the hospital for check up. The entire country is on high alert and our faces are plastered on every social media. We all need to hide for the mean time." He said while running his fingers through his hair in frustration.
"How long?" I asked.
"It could be awhile. Heck I don't know, years perhaps?" He snapped.
"Have you heard from Sebastian yet?" Jake shook his head "no" accompanied by a long exhausted sigh. Heck, even I was exhausted as of the rest of the men, or what is left of it.
The Salvatore's has really upgraded themselves with high end security and new modern weapons that I have not seen before. With my mind filled with revenge I went blindly into attack mode without thinking of the consequences. Now I'm 10 times less of an army."Have you noticed the child hasn't let out a cry since we arrived?" A gruff voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I looked at the girl, her eyes were closed. Maybe she's sleeping? God I hope so. I tap on her right cheek softly, she turned to my finger with her mouth open, trying to capture my finger into her mouth.
"Now I'm no expert on babies but I think she's hungry." A man I have no idea his name is, said.
"And yet you said you're no expert." I responded.
"I may have know a thing or two." He added. I nodded before asking, "what's your name?"
"Josiah."
"Dukas." I told him. He nodded.
"Greek?" He asked
"Born and raised." I responded.
A whimper caught our attention. "Let's get you food, sweetheart."
"She only needs milk." Josiah butt in. I shot him a glare and he backed off with his hands raised in surrender.
"Uncle, this is Rachael-" Jake motioned to the woman who was standing meekly next to him.
"How did you get here?" I asked confused.
"I called her." Jake replied.
I raised a brow in confusion."She's someone I know and is a nurse. I called her in to check on the baby. She won't say anything." He finished.
"Are you sure?" He only nodded as a respond and so i cautiously hand her over to the nurse.
"Be careful with her. I'll be watching." I warned. And when i received a nod, i stepped back a little to give her space.
"Such a quiet little girl." She commented. I was a little worried so i asked, "is that normal?" "Mostly it is. But its not common, though." She replied while she checked the child.
"The umbilical cord was immaturely cut. I need to cut the rest off before she gets an infection. And she also need a good clean up. All that goo from the sac has stuck to her skin. So, i need a warm boiled water and clean towels, and possibly some clothes for her, along with nappies and stuff-" Rachel trailed off.
