Ch 1

I swung off my horse and raced towards the roped off area for the 16 year old girls. I was late... Mother would be furious.... As I reached the area, the Capitol lady was already digging her hand through the bowl. I glanced over and mine and my best friend Ben's eyes met. "loser." he mouthed, "you're late." I stuck out my tongue and tried to regain my breath. He laughed at me. I looked back at the lady. She had pulled out a name and was opening the piece of paper. "Endymion Hadley." she read. My heart stopped and I was paralyzed with fear. "No," I thought, " you are strong. Don't let them think you're scared." I raised my chin and walked up the steps, trying to keep what I hoped was a nonchalant look. I looked at Ben and almost lost it for a moment but then I looked away. "I have to forget him now," I thought. "I'm not coming back." the capitol lady reached her hand into the boy's jar and pulled out another slip of paper. "Ben Farworth." I gasped. “One of us was enough!" Ben looked shocked but only for a moment. He like me understood the need to look strong. I looked around desperate for volunteers but no one came. "Alright! Shake hands now." the lady said. Me and Ben shook hands and he have mine a comforting squeeze like everything was going to be alright but... Of course... It wasn't. ~~~~~ The door banged open and I looked up from where I sat on a leather cover chair in the justice building. My older sister ran towards me and gave me a hug. "Can't...breath...lemme go Morgan." She she let go and backed up. I could tell she had been crying. "Where are mom and dad?" I demanded. Morgan shook her head. Of course they weren't here. They didn't care about me. "Endymion look at me," my sister said and I did, "you're coming home!" I shook my head "But Ben is going too..." I said. My sister looked at me sadly and was about to say something but at that moment the peacekeepers slammed open the doors and grabbed her arms. "Remember I love you!" she cried as they escorted her out.
