Ch 7

I woke up late. The sun was streaming through the windows and I squinted at the clock. 10:30. I sighed. I dragged myself out of bed, showered, pulled on a simple dress, and brushed my hair and teeth. The door swung open as I pulled the handle and I walked down to the dining car. Tanya and Ben were there. Along with our mentor who was gumming a piece of soft bread. I met Ben's eyes but I blushed and looked away. "Where have you been?!" Tanya demands. I scowl at her. "Hunting dragons. Where do you think?” I ask her sarcastically. "You should have been up three hours ago." she says angrily. "Well unlike you, I need sleep because, unlike you, I am going into a contest where people kill each other!" Tanya looks flustered now and stands up and hurries out with her hand pressed to her mouth. I watch her go with an exasperated look. What an idiot. I look around. Great, now I'm left with my best friend that kissed me last night and I don't know how I feel about that and an ancient man who's supposed to help me survive in the Hunger Games which I will most likely not live through. I turn around and walk out. I don't want to deal with anything right now. I hurry to the balcony and look out over the city. I don't like it much. It's all concrete and glass. I suppose there's really good architecture, but really, I don't care much. "Endymion." I hear a voice behind me. It's Ben. He never calls me by my full name. It's always been just Endy. "What?" I ask without turning around. "Will you please look at me?" he asks. I turn around slowly and look him in the eye. He takes a step closer. “Look, I’m sorry about last night... will you forgive me?” I shrugged. “Well say something!” he exclaimed, “this is hard enough as it is without you saying anything.” I look down. “I’m sorry Ben… it’s just… I don’t know what I think about you.” He drops his eyes and immediately I feel bad. “Look Ben. Why don’t we just leave it as it is now and we can work this all out later?” I say. He shrugs reluctantly. “Alright then…” I glance at the sun. “we had better go get ready for interviews tonight.” I say wearily. He nods and heads back down the stairs.
