This will be sort of a bonus chapter where you learn about Alex's backstory some more. Feel free to skip it if you want.
Alexander POV
I look at Eliza with total fear and sadness. She has the same sickness that took my mother when I was young and caught me, but I was lucky to stay alive. Many memories started to flood my head.
////
Alexander- Mamma?
Rachel- Yes, Lexi?
Alexander- Will.... will we ever get better?
My mother started to have another coughing fit. Once she was finished, she breathed for a minute and motioned for me to lay down.
Rachel- Remember the story about the maiden and her father?
I shake my head. Of coarse, I remember the story, but I just want her to say it again to make me feel better.
Rachel- Well, it went like this. Once upon a time, there lived a maiden who worked with her father is the family bakery. They made all types of food: bread, cookies, cupcakes, cake, and more! One day when the girl was working behind the counter, she got a lovely male customer. The two never believed in love at first sight, but from that moment, they did. After that day, the two spent almost every day together. Until their parents found out.
I shake because I remember what's going to happen and I hate it.
Rachel- Her father didn't approve of him, because he came from a really poor family, and his mother didn't approve of her, because the family was jealous and angered by the bakery's popularity and how much money they made. So, the couple ran away together and she never talked to her father for a lone time. Well, one day, the father got extremely sick. She didn't want to see him, but when she found out that he was dying, she went there as soon as she heard. They spent a good hour together until he passed away.
My mother reaches for my face and wipes my tears away.
Rachel- But before he died, he said: "There is no where you'll go where I won't be following you."
After a few minutes, she started coughing some more. And soon, she collapsed and went cold. I tried to wake her up, but I couldn't so I gave up and collapsed and started crying.
A few days later, I heard the sound of footsteps around my house. I coward to my dead mom, still in her arms. The people banged down the door and I saw the sheriff, my cousin, and my neighbors. They all examine me and force myself out of my mom's arms. I try to kick out of their grasp but I don't have the energy. They bring me to my cousin's house and healed me.
A few months later, there's a hurricane that killed everyone else that I have known. I couldn't seem to die. Why? There's absolutely nothing else for me to do. Well, maybe write.
I went to my cousin's now broken house and find a bunch of papers and pens inside of my uncle's desk that were still good. The thing is though, I don't know how to write... or read.
Well crap.
Are there any books..... ah ha yes! Found his bookshelf! I start reading every book at survived or was readable.
A week later, I walk around town and see everyone looking at me and I wonder: and I really that ugly? Soon, a random women comes up to me and hugs me. Excuse me? I don't know you, also you smell weird. They tell me that they read my story, and I'm shocked. I didn't think anyone would read it! They care a huge box that is only filled with money and tell me that they raised money for me to start school at the main land. I'm still shocked.
