I woke up lying on the English room floor, faces staring down at me. A halo of light stood where the heads didn't, and I blinked heavily. My head was throbbing, and my heart was racing. I could feel my palms sweating and my legs tingling. Someone was moving their fingers in front of my face, and telling me something, but it sounded as if I were underwater. I stared forward into the blinding light, wondering why it never seemed so bright before.
"Beth!"
It was becoming clearer what people were saying, as if I were swimming towards the surface. My vision was clearing and focusing on faces.
"Beth, can you hear me?"
My head broke the surface and I jolted upright, gasping for air, as if I had been drowning, only I wasn't in the water. Vincent caught me from slamming my head on a desk, and it had been him calling my name.
I looked around, and my heart raced faster, everyone was staring at me as if I were a wild animal. Some looked concerned while others looked angry at me. I thought about what had happened before, and once again was hit with a wall of reality.
I was sent to the nurse's office, where they called my father, who said it was okay if I went home, and that he'd come back from work to look after me. I told him that he didn't need to, I just need rest. Vincent, Makenzie and Cecei walked me home, the hung out with me until the end of lunch, when they went back to school. I decided to go with them, as I felt better, and didn't want to miss all my classes.
The day passed in a dull fashion, and when I got home I flopped onto my bed. I closed my eyes for barley even the length of a blink when my phone rang. Caller ID said that it was Dad.
"Hey," I answered and listened to the white noise for a second.
"Hey Els, so I'm coming home early and picking up Chinese food on the way," he sounded ecstatic.
"Okay, what time will you be home?" I asked, trying to plan my evening.
"In an hour or two, is that okay?" he asked.
"Yep, that's perfect, I'll see you then, bye."
"Bye," he said back, then I heard the line drop and heard the horrible ringing come through the static. I hung up, and put my phone on my side table.
My plans consisted of doing nothing, and watching Netflix. They were interrupted when the doorbell rang though.
I walked at a snail's pace down the stairs to the front hall, and opened the door to reveal Toby.
"People are going to start thinking that we live together," I said sarcastically.
"They probably already do," he said even more sarcastically.
"Okay, why are you here though?" I asked.
"To see you, my love," he called out, and I shut the door quickly, as I was afraid that the neighbours would hear him.
"No really, why?" I asked again.
"Oh, I don't know, I was bored at my house. My parents aren't home all the time, because they work in the city like your Dad," He explained, and I accepted it.
"What do you want to do?" I asked, because I didn't think my plans would be all that fulfilling now.
"We could go for a walk," he suggested, and I accepted, slipping on my shoes.
We strolled around the neighbourhood, avoiding the forest, and talked about nothing and yet everything. Eventually, we looped back around to Tabernayt Blvd. and by then Toby's arm was resting around my shoulders, and I couldn't even remember when it had gotten there. We walked in sync with each other, like two halves of the same whole.
