The next couple days go as a blur of friends, and long days of nothing.
But finally, it slows down to the day of the Special picking.
All the neighbors, including our family, are preparing.
Cooking.
Cleaning.
Freshening.
Anything to make anything better.
All day, I am and excited tangle of nerves, tingling in anticipation.
And finally.
5:45, all five of us head out, this time not even minding the cold.
It seems that all of our neighborhood is crammed into the city plaza.
Our Mayor, Mayor Tolper, has a long speech about how wonderful this time of year is for the neighborhood. I just blank out. It means nothing To me.
After about, 45 minutes she finally announces it's the time.
All the kids snap to attention as Mayor pulls out the Box of Names.
She is only allowed onto pick 3, people each year.
So as she reaches into the worn box, everyone draws in a breath.
"Francine, Muleton." The Mayor shouts.
As soon as the words slip out if her mouth, a portion of a crowd to my right, start yelling and screaming at Francine. She looks over at me in the flurry and winks, then quickly looks away.
"Second, Elena Scarton."
Another section of the crowd goes wild. My heart sinks. I really thought this year was my year.
"And last. But not least of all," she pulls out a slip of paper but I don't even glance up," Madylyn, Branche."
My heart flutters. Could it really be me? It couldn't be.
But the look on Elena's face, and the look on my parent's faces confirm it.
