Chapter One
Kay had seen a lot of strange, shocking, and downright insane things in the past couple of years as the Emerald's Chosen. But nothing to date gave her more pause than seeing Shadow the Hedgehog standing before her in the darkness, looking completely serious, holding out his hand to her as he was now. Whatever words she'd been about to say died on her tongue as she looked first at his outstretched palm, then into his eyes.
"I said," he repeated, "come with me." Kay opened her mouth to protest, but then he added, "Please."
That one word signaled to her that something was off. Shadow almost never said 'please' anything. Her fear for the others in the camp vanished entirely, but her suspicion only grew. She frowned, giving him a sidelong glance. "Shadow..." she said in a low voice to match his tone (and to not disturb the others). "What are you doing?"
The last time she'd asked that question, she'd been battling him to save Espio from being captured in the forest a couple days' travel outside of the Dragon Kingdom's capital. He hadn't answered her then. This time he did. "I need to speak with you, Chosen," he said. "Alone."
Kay knew it was pointless to ask him what he wanted to speak about. If he said he wanted to discuss whatever it was alone, he wouldn't tell her anything until they were. She glanced over her shoulder. The others were all still asleep.
"Don't worry about them," Shadow said, as if reading her thoughts. "They will not be harmed while we speak."
Kay turned back to him, curious. "May I have your word on that?"
He nodded once, slowly. "You may."
She let out a breath, paused a moment longer, but ultimately her curiosity won out and she approached him, expecting him to begin leading her off into the darkness of the forest to talk. Instead he stayed right where he was, leaving his hand stretched out to her. It was only when Kay was about to collide with him that she realized he had no intention of moving. She stopped, glanced down, and slowly placed her palm against his, as if to shake his hand.
His fingers closed around her in a firm grip, and suddenly Kay found she couldn't breathe. Her eyes widened in surprise and terror, but just as suddenly she was able to breathe again, and a wave of disorientation slammed into her when the scenery around her changed completely. She gasped and staggered back, but Shadow held on to her and kept her from falling over.
"What—" She gasped, holding onto his arm. "What did you do?"
"Stop being so dramatic," Shadow grumbled, releasing her once she was able to stand on her own. "You've teleported before."
She glared at him. "Never like that!"
He scoffed, turning away from her. Once his back was turned Kay's eyes darted to the new scenery around her. They appeared to be in a cave somewhere. It was dark, with no stars above, and a slight breeze on one side of them. The cave walls seemed to have drawings that glowed fluorescent pink, and there were crystals embedded within the stone to match. Kay gradually straightened, her dizziness fading the longer she took in her new surroundings.
"Where are we?" she asked, turning to look in the direction Shadow had gone. He was nowhere to be found. She blinked. "Shadow?"
"Don't panic, Chosen One. I'm still here."
"I wasn't panicking," she snapped back, still trying to see him in the dark. It was amazing how this version of the black hedgehog could blend so perfectly into the darkness. "Where did you take me?"
"What does it matter?" Shadow replied, emerging into her line of sight once more, holding something in his hand. Kay's eyes darted to it automatically.
