Indie stood nervously at the desk in the front office. She kept grabbing a strand of hair and twisting it around and around her finger.
"Well Miss Thompson, all your paperwork is in order and here is your schedule. We hope you have a wonderful time at Filmore High!," Ms. Brinks grinned handing over a slip of paper. She was a plump middle aged woman who was always super friendly.
Gwen started bouncing a little, eager to see what classes Indie had. Praying they shared at least one.
"Uh...Ms.? I don't really know my way around, can Gwen here be my guide?" Indie asked.
"Oh! Of course! I will write her a note in case she runs late for a class. Gwen here is very lovely, I'm sure you'll be close friends!", Ms. Brinks smiled grabbing a second piece of paper and began scribbling.
The two girls stood in silence waiting. Gwen sensed that Indie was more anxious than she let on.
When Gwen took the paper she thanked Ms. Brinks and her and Indie exited into the hallway.
"So", Gwen burst out before she could stop herself, "May I look at your schedule?"
Indie smiled and handed her schedule over.
1st: English
2nd: French
3rd: Math
Lunch
4th: P.E.
5th: Speech/Drama
6th: History
7th: Band
"Hey! We have most classes together!", Gwen exclaimed excitedly.
Indie's eyes lit up, "Really? Which ones?"
"English, Math, P.E., Speech AND Band!", Gwen giggled.
"Well shall we head to English then?", Indie asked looking nervous again.
Gwen nodded and they headed down the hall together. A few people stopped and stared at Indie, boys mostly, but Indie didn't seem to notice. She was staring at her feet.
When they reached the classroom Gwen looked at Indie and said, "It's okay, Mr. Syvertson is really cool! He doesn't make new kids stand and introduce themselves. You'll like him!"
Indie nodded, took a deep breath and lead the way into the classroom. Visibly shaking.
Gwen quietly took her seat as Indie walked up to Mr. Syvertson and handed him a piece of paper. He looked at it, smiled and pointed her towards a desk near the window.
Kids turned and watched Indie walk towards her new desk. Gavin Baxter whispered to Dave who glanced at Indie with a little too much interest.
Mr. Syvertson must have noticed the whispers and staring because he soon stood up and said, "As exciting as a new student may be, I would like to think a certain Miss Jane Austen might be a little more intriguing. Please turn to chapter five please."
Indie turned and looked at Gwen, who smiled and pulled out her book. "See, told you!", she mouthed at Indie.
As Mr. Syvertson turned towards the whiteboard, Gwen swore she saw him wink at Indie.
Too bad the rest of the day wasn't as peaceful.
