How can she be so cruel!, Gwen thought to herself. Cassie had always had a mean streak but this? this was outrageously horrid!
Gwen looked up and down the hallway searching for Luke and Indie. Thankfully she spotted them pretty quickly.
Luke was sitting on the floor with his head buried in his arms, shoulders shaking. Indie stood above him rubbing his back and talking in a soothing voice.
Indie looked up only when Gwen approached. She didn't give Gwen a disgusted look or tell her to go away. A good sign.
"I am so so sorry you guys!", Gwen said, "If I would have...I'm not like..", she trailed off not really knowing what to say.
Sighing Indie turned towards Gwen, "It's not your fault. Really it's not.", She held up a finger so Gwen wouldn't interrupt. "I got that like a lot in my last school. It..it doesn't bother you does it?", She faltered.
"Oh my god! Not at all! Why would it? I mean love is love right?" Gwen said. Truth be told she was actually excited to hear Indie was gay. Not that she'd tell her that.
Luke finally looked up, his eyes were bloodshot from crying and he had some snot dripping onto his jacket. "You..would she really tell everyone? ", he asked pleading for an answer Gwen knew she couldn't give him.
Gwen shifted uncomfortably and sat down next to Luke. "I'm not going to lie to you Luke, Cassie probably will. If she's capable of doing that. But that doesn't mean I think anything different of you! You are still Luke! Nothing has changed!", She put her arm around his shoulder. Luke let out a heartbreaking sob.
"My Dad will kill me! He hates gay people, says they...I'm...", but he couldn't continue.
Luke lived with his mom and three younger brothers, they were all nice people. But his Dad has a reputation.
"How about this, you come over straight to my house today and we can talk to my parents! They don't judge and maybe they can give you advice?", Gwen squeezed his shoulder.
Indie walked around them and sat down on Luke's other side. "You know what Luke? I think that's a brilliant idea! You can't do this alone and Gwen here sounds like an amazing person to have as a friend. But really it's up to you."
Luke furrowed his eyebrows, "Do you think your parents would say something to mine?", he asked in a shaky voice.
"No Luke I don't believe they would. Like Indie said it's your choice, just know we are here for you!", Gwen said.
"But what about Cassie? Won't she be mad at you for talking to me?"
Gwen scowled, "Not as mad as she probably is right now with me." Indie and Luke both stared at Gwen confused. "I told her she was a loser and that I'm cutting ties with her."
Luke and Indie exchanged shocked looks.
"But she's your best friend!", Luke exclaimed.
"Not anymore. I have no room in my life for toxic people and believe me she's as toxic as they come. Shame that this is what it took for me to see that." Gwen smiled, "it's okay though maybe we can find her a pie?"
They all started laughing. Luke got up and offered a hand to both Indie and Gwen. He pulled them up right as the bell rang.
"Okay, I'll come over. Thanks Gwen.", he pulled her into a quick tight hug then turned and headed to class.
