Breed Shift

     Enjoy had an X-ray showing that the bullet went straight through her. She was transferred to a room where they then started to stitch her wounds caused by the bullet shut. After that they sent her to me and we waited for our parents.
     Emily played with Winter, Midnight was tied to a nearby pole, and I was taking a nap. Mom showed up and took us to the store to meet dad. Emily was numbed and fell asleep on the way there.
"Aurora, we're here," mom said waking me from a random catnap.
"OK, do we have to go in?" I asked.
"No, but make sure you stay safe," mom said.
"I will, I also have midnight to protect me," I said.
"Emily, are you coming," mom asked.
"No, too painful," Emily said.
"OK, Aurora, protect your sister as well," mom said.
"Like you have to ask me twice," I responded.
     Mom went in and I moved to the back with Emily. She wanted to lay down so I lowered the back of her seat. She fell asleep with Winter on her laps. I forced myself to stay awake until mom and dad got back. Midnight dozed off within 5 minutes.
     Mom and dad came back 30 minutes later. They were arguing about something. Dad won the argument, which was a surprise.
"Aurora, the doctor's finally named your disorder," mom said.
"OK, is the a problem with the name?" I asked.
"No, it is called Breed Shift," she said.
"Work in progress I'm guessing," I said.
"Yeah, it is caused by an extra gene that only animals have," she said.
"Have they named the gene?" I asked.
"Yeah, they named it the Animal Gene," mom said.
"Well that's nice to know," I said.
"Yeah, they called while we were in there," mom said.
"How many people have been born with?" I asked hoping that there were more.
"Just you and Emily," mom said.
"Oh OK," I said sadly.
"Don't worry, there will be more," mom said.
"I know but still, it's depressing," I said.
     Mom hugged me and I started to cry. Winter woke up and jumped on me. Midnight noticed and looked at me. When I stopped we were at Sam's house. I apparently cried myself to sleep.
"Why are we here?" I asked sleepily.
"You need to relax," mom said.
"So, you are forcing me to stay with my boyfriend?" I asked confused.
"Yes, everyone else is staying at a hotel for the next few days," mom said.
"Is that another reason why I'm staying with Sam?" I asked.
"Yes, we know you don't like hotels," mom said.
"OK, can I bring Winter?" I asked.
"Yes, you can bring both," mom said.
"OK, bye love you," I said.
     I left the vehicle and picked up Midnight and told Winter to follow. I rang Sam's doorbell and Rowan answered. He smirked and Midnight almost jumped out of my hands to attack him.
"Is Sam home?" I asked.
"Yeah, he is in, come on in," Rowan said.
"Where is he?" I asked.
"His room," Rowan said.
     I went upstairs and mimicked his mother's knock on his door. He opened the door and I immediately put Midnight down and hugged him. I took him by surprise.
