Adora

"Why haven't you worn this for me?"

I turned around as Derek held up a lingerie set, rolling my eyes with a smile.

"You're a busy guy," I said, grabbing it from him as I rested a hand on his abdomen.

"I'll cancel all my meetings if it's cutting into our sexy time."

"No," I said, "you go on. We can have sexy time tonight."

Derek seemed to always be gone now. He was always in meetings and always being successful, and I was genuinely happy for him.

But I wanted time with him.

We'd even agreed to put off the wedding since his schedule was so inconsistent. It was impossible to know when something would come up at one of his hospitals, or one of his animal sanctuaries.

And it wasn't that I was getting tired of waiting, it was just that I'm impatient. When I want something, I want something immediately. And if I don't get that very something immediately, I start wanting it less and less.

And that's exactly what I was afraid of.

I snapped out of my thoughts and smiled as Derek planted a kiss on my cheek. "I love you. I'll be back as soon as I can."

"Okay, babe," I said, "have a good day."

He smiled and waved before he ran out of the door, leaving me alone. I just let out a sigh, staring at the closed door.

I brushed off whatever trace of sadness was there and ran upstairs and into our bedroom, going into my closet.

I plopped down on the floor and looked at the many hangers occupied by cute lingerie pieces that were simply going to waste, and I frowned.

Would Brenna maybe want some?

I pulled all of the hangers off of the rack, sorting through them. I separated the red sets from the black sets, the white sets from the pink sets, the blue sets from the purple. I really did have an excess of lingerie.

I threw some hangers to the side that held the ones I solely wasn't interested in anymore, and kept the others. Most of the ones I'd thrown to the side I hadn't worn, so Brenna would love them.

I grabbed my phone and opened our messages.

[To: Bren]
Got some gifts for you. Come over later today if you can!!

I threw my phone back down and frowned down at the thousands of dollars that I'd spent on cute things that I could wear on a nightly basis, but I just wore a big t-shirt and boxers instead.

I sighed and stood up, stripping myself of my clothes. I grabbed a red set and tried it on, standing in front of the mirror.

I couldn't tell how I felt about my body. I knew I'd gained weight, but it was healthy weight. I shot myself a smile through the mirror, but looked down at my phone when it buzzed.

[From: Bren]
Ah love! I would love to stop by but Zayn and I are at a "reunion" thing, if you will, with his family all day today. Let's make plans tomorrow though!

I could tell I had a bratty look on my face. I was hoping Brenna could stop by to give me some company so I wouldn't be alone for yet another day.

My phone buzzed yet again, so I picked it up.

[From: Unknown Number]
Hey, it's Santiago. Could you meet me somewhere today? I have some news for you. (By the way I got your number from Derek)

My eyes dilated as soon as I realized I was texting Santiago while in lingerie. I quickly stripped and threw on some regular clothes, plopping down on the bed.

[To: New Contact: Santiago King]
Ok, tell me where to meet you and I'll be there.

[From: Santiago King]
Coffee shop good with you?

[To: Santiago King]
Yep. I'll meet you there.

There was a nervous feeling in my stomach, but I refused to let it get to me.

Santiago

I drummed my fingers against the table in front of me, leaning back in my chair as I waited on Adora to stroll in.

My phone vibrated and I looked down at it, furrowed brows.

[From: Alessandra]
Rose loves the onesie you got her!! She won't let me put anything else on her

I smiled down at the text. Being Alessandra's friend was so much easier than being her husband.

[To: Alessandra]
I'm glad! I have more gifts waiting on her. Tell her uncle Santy is coming over today!

[From: Alessandra]
Will do, boss! Do the boys have their bags packed?

The door flew open and in Adora Franklin walked, brushing her messy hair out of her face.

"Sorry," she mouthed in my direction, weaving her way through the line of people waiting on coffee.

As soon as she got to the table, she let out an exhausted sigh. "It's crazy what Seattle people will do for a cup of coffee."

I chuckled and slid the coffee I got her across the table to her.

"Thank you," she said, pulling out her chair, "you didn't have to."

She sat down and I watched her hips flare out from her tiny waist as she did, and she fully noticed. I watched a small grin form and she tucked her hair behind her ear.

"Why'd you need to meet me?" She asked.

"So," I said, "I told you about the job yesterday, and told you I'd get it?"

She furrowed her brows together. "You didn't already get it, did you?"

I shot her an accomplished smile, leaning back in my chair.

Her eyebrows shot up and she just looked down at her coffee, clearing her throat. "I kind of thought he'd want to talk to the person that's actually getting the job."

"He does," I said, "but you've basically got the job."

She looked up at me from under her thick eyelashes.

"Thanks," she said, "but I could've gotten it myself, you know."

"I know you could have," I said.

"Then why did you get it for me?" She asked, a confused look on her face.

"Listen, Adora," I said, "opportunities come and go. I'm forty, I know that. Maybe you should take one, definitely when it's served to you on a silver platter."

She just sighed, pursing her lips together.

It was still beyond me as to how she was so effortlessly beautiful.

"Like I said, thank you," she said, "but I hope the job comes to me because of my interview, and not because of yours."

I furrowed my brows together at her.

"God," she sighed out, her head falling back, "I'm sorry. I've been a real bitch to you since I saw you. I don't mean to be, I hope you know that."

I just smiled. "You really have been."

She shot me a sarcastic smile.

"It's just there's a lot going on, you know."

I nodded, folding my arms over my chest.

She looked up at me, her teeth tugging at her bottom lip. "Seattle holds a lot of things I'd rather forget."

I smiled and stood up, grabbing my jacket. "If I was one of those things, I wouldn't be mad. Good luck with the interview."

She stood up with me and grabbed my arm as I began to walk away.

I looked down at her and her eyes wandered to my chest. "You aren't."

I just nodded as I pulled my arm away from her hand. "Goodbye, Adora."

And with that, I walked away from her.

"You didn't answer my text, I'm assuming the boys' bags are packed?"

I looked over at Alessandra, who had a grin on her face.

"Yes," I said, "sorry, I got sidetracked."

I picked Rose up from the couch and into my arms, standing up. "I'll go get them, they're still in the car."

She grabbed Rose from me and nodded, but grabbed my shoulder before I walked away from her. "Hey, you okay?"

I flexed my jaw muscle and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine."

No, I wasn't fine.

I grabbed my car keys and walked outside, opening the trunk of my car. I reached inside and grabbed the boys' bags out, slamming it shut unintentionally.

I had no intentions of letting Adora get in my head again. Maybe I just needed a night out with the guys.

I walked back inside and dropped the boys' bags by the door, earning a blank expression from Alessandra.

"I know you, Santiago. What's going on," she asked, plopping down in her chair with Rose in her arms.

I sat down on her couch, sighing as I rested my head in my hand. "I hate letting people inside my head, you know."

She smiled. "I know."

"And the same person who got in my head five years ago is already making her way back in it. I've seen her maybe five times since she's been here."

"San," she said, "don't worry about it too much. Maybe you and Mateo should go to the bar tonight and have fun. I'll keep the kids here. But tell me if Mateo gets crazy."

I chuckled. "No, I don't think drinking will help. It didn't help five years ago, it's not going to now."

She smiled. "Everything works out in time."

"I think I'm just overthinking things."

"Or maybe you're just denying something that you couldn't admit a long time ago," she sang.

I looked over at her and furrowed my brows together.

She smiled and shrugged, handing Rose over to me. "I need to start dinner."

I smiled as Rose reached out to me, grabbing her and showering her with kisses.

She let out a giggle and I hugged her tighter to me, standing up with her.

Mateo walked inside, making Alessandra's eyes snap over to the door.

"Hi, love," she sang. He smiled and pressed a kiss to her cheek, jogging over to Rose and I.

"Hi, mi amor," he said, his manly demeanor changing in an instant. He grabbed her and pressed a kiss to her cheek, smiling over at me.

"Hey, Santy. I swear you get older every day."

"Cuida tu lenguaje," I sang.

He chuckled. "Hey, you still look twenty."

"Buen guardar, hermanito," I said, giving his back a good pat.

"You good?" He asked, furrowed brows as he nodded over at me.

Alessandra's eyes met mine for a split second before she looked back down at the stove, a smile on her face. "He's in a love crisis."

"I am not," I said with a roll of my eyes, "I am perfectly fine, and we're dropping the subject."
