My chin fell into my palm with a sigh, making me cock an eyebrow up at the computer screen in front of me."Oh, love, don't get defeated."
I sat back in my chair. "It's not the easiest thing to find a publisher in Seattle that wants an editor."
She shot me a weak smile. "Sorry."
I rolled my eyes, throwing my head back with a groan. "And on top of not being able to find a job, I have a lunch date with Derek and Santiago."
Her eyebrows shot up. "Love triangle?"
"Very funny," I said, "but pass."
She smiled over at me. "Seriously. Two rich men with you, you're not in a bad spot is all I'm saying."
I couldn't help the smile pulling at my lips.
"But I am sorry love."
I sighed again as I tried rewording my search. Maybe I would find something different.
"Why does no one need an editor? We're like, essential to publish books! This is ridiculous, especially since everyone is a writer these days!"
I looked over at a quiet Brenna, who stood with furrowed brows and parted lips.
"Stop looking at me like that."
"Maybe, and don't freak out. But maybe you could ask Derek or dare I say, Santiago
for some help?""You're just full of jokes today Brenna, really."
Brenna threw up her hands defensively and walked into my kitchen, coming back with two wine glasses and a bottle of red wine.
"You need to relax. You'll never find work if you freak out babe."
"I know, but it's just-"
"Ah," she interrupted, "no more talking. Drink some. I promise that you'll find somewhere soon. You're a terrific writer and editor Adds. I believe in you."
I simply nodded, deciding that Brenna was right. The search was terrible but I was glad she was here, otherwise there'd be a hole in the wall.
After three glasses of wine, I applied to some small publishing companies. They weren't hiring but maybe they'd change their minds if they saw my application.
"Great. Now that you're calm and done for the time being, I really need to get my nails done. They look horrid. A mani pedi would nice, right?"
"I think you're forgetting about my lunch plans," I reminded her. "Derek thinks that this will bring me and Santiago together."
"Well, maybe if you told him-"
"Oops. Would you believe how time flies? Looks like I have to go," I shouted at her as I walked out of the door, avoiding her upcoming sentence in every way possible, because I knew exactly what it would be.

Derek's eyes toggled between Santiago and I, his lips pursed together.
"How did the job search go?" He asked, breaking the silence between the three of us.
"Terrible," I blurted.
I could see Santiago's eyebrow cock up out of the corner of my eye, but I ignored it.
"Yeah," I said, grabbing my coffee cup with both of my hands in an attempt to warm them up, "apparently no one needs an editor."
"What are you looking to edit?" Santiago asked, "if you don't mind me asking."
I looked away from Derek and at Santiago, my lips parted. "I just want a publisher that's interested in an editor for actual books."
