Adora

My eyes fluttered open, a small sigh making its way out of me. I raised my arms above my head, stretching before sitting up and rubbing my eyes.

I grabbed my phone and looked down at the time. It was only 7:05. Why was I starting to get up early?

I scrolled through the notifications I had. A few messages from Brenna, a message from Derek.

[From: Derek]
Breakfast is made. Hope it didn't get too cold. I love you, have a good day

I smiled down at the message, sliding it open.

[To: Derek]
Thanks. Love you. Have a good day

I stood up and stretched yet again, yawning before walking into the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror, a frown forming on my face at my messy hair.

I threw it up into a messy bun, brushing my teeth before turning off the light. I rotated my ring around with my thumb as I jogged downstairs.

That very small move sparked my interest to go for a run. I hadn't been out for a run in forever, and my fitness was starting to become another one of my main priorities slowly but surely.

I smiled to myself and ran back upstairs, into my closet. I placed my hand on my hip as I looked through my workout attire. I decided on leggings, a sports bra, and a windbreaker. I slipped into my tennis shoes and grabbed my arm band, slipping my phone and some money inside.

I walked downstairs and grabbed a water from the fridge, eyeing the breakfast on the stove. I decided against it, and decided for getting a breakfast sandwich from the coffee shop.

I pulled my ring off so I wouldn't risk losing it, opening the door to be met with the perfect air. It was cloudy, but wasn't raining, and the weather was perfect. Not too hot, not too cold, just perfect.

I closed the door behind me and put my headphones in my ears, beginning to run. I smiled at the feeling of the air hitting my face, the feeling of my feet beating against the ground.

"Hi!" One of my neighbors yelled, making me throw a hand up with a smile.

The people in Seattle weren't welcoming but they weren't unwelcoming. It was easy to decide who was from here and who wasn't.

After about twenty more minutes of running, I stopped when I saw a kid just running around outside by himself, my eyebrows going into a furrow.

He looked identical to Freddy and Josiah five years ago.

His father, I'm assuming, walked outside of the house, shooting me a smile. He looked nothing like Santiago, though.

I shot him a smile and continued running, stopping at the end of the sidewalk. I waited for the cars to go by before running across the street, which led me to the coffee shop. Living next to the coffee shop probably wasn't beneficial for my health, but I didn't care. I'd gotten in my run.

I walked inside the coffee shop, pulling out my headphones.

The minimal line made my eyebrows shoot up. There was always a line backed up to the door. Maybe it was because it was so early.

I looked around the empty coffee shop, but noticed one person.

And that one person just had to be Santiago King.

I couldn't help the sigh that made its way from my mouth and I closed my eyes. I walked up to the counter and gained his attention just by telling the barista my order.

I darted my eyes over to Santiago as I handed her a five dollar bill, noticing how grown out his beard was. It wasn't far from a stubble, but wasn't just a stubble.

I thought Santiago looked good with his beard.

I watched his lips pull into a grin, his eyes dart back down to his phone.

I couldn't help the smile that appeared on my face and I let out a small laugh. "Keep the change."

The barista smiled at me and nodded, pointing me over to the table where my coffee and sandwich would be served to me.

It quickly came out, and I walked over to the table that was nearby Santiago's table.

"Are you ever anywhere else?" I asked, not making eye contact with him.

I felt his smile. "I could ask you the same thing."

I smiled and threw my straw in the garbage after stirring my creamer around in my coffee. I leaned against the table and he looked up at me, an eyebrow cocked up. His eyes darted down to my half exposed chest and quickly back up to my eyes.

"Nice seeing you around," I said, smiling as I grabbed my breakfast sandwich.

"You too," he replied, and I felt his eyes on me as I walked out of the coffee shop.

Adora

I giggled as I held my phone up to my ear. "I'm sure he'll love whatever we put together for him."

"But I want him to, like, really feel the love!" Brenna yelled, "we've missed him."

"That we have," I said, "but let's not overwhelm him."

She let out a sigh. "Now you and I both know I'm the queen of overwhelming people."

I laughed. "That's true."

"But I guess we can take it easy on the kid."

"So is he planning on moving back?" I asked, writing down dinner ideas for the dinner that was only a few days away now.

"He won't tell me that he is, but I'm sure he is. He's probably had enough of London. Or at least he's staying here for a while."

I smiled. "I'm happy to have him back around."

"Yeah, same here. Hey, remember that time you told him a big secret and didn't tell me?"

I laughed and threw my head back. "I actually do remember that very vividly."

"Yeah. And I was pissed? I'm not anymore, just so you know."

I giggled. "Good to know, Bren."

I heard her fall down on her bed. "So we've got his favorite dishes. Are we decorating the house up really fancy?"

"Bren," I said, "no overwhelming. Remember that for me?"

She groaned. "It's not easy!"

I laughed. "Hey, someone's beeping in. I'll call you back."

"Okay. You better!"

I smiled and looked down at my phone, seeing Landon's number. I squealed and hit the answer button.

"Landon!" I screeched.

"Adora!" He screeched, as well. I laughed and fell back on the couch.

"I have been looking for your bloody number for a month now! I feel like I haven't talked to you in years."

I laughed. "I missed you for that whole month!"

"Same here!" He yelled, "ah, love, how are you?"

"I'm fantastic, how are you?"

I could hear his smile through the phone. "I'm pretty damn well, Adds."

I grinned. "That's good, Lan. I'm so excited to see you."

"I'm beyond excited to see you! I have so much shit to tell you, Adora. Seriously."

"I can't wait to hear it, Landon."

He giggled. "I bet you can, but okay."

I laughed. "So, how's London for you?"

"Still as beautiful as it has been for five years. But I'm tired of being here, so I'm coming back to spend some time in the states. I miss it, believe it or not."

"Shocker, actually," I said, continuing to write things down on my tiny note pad.

"Right?" He exclaimed, "how's Derek?"

"Derek's good," I said, "I'd let you talk to him, but he's at a meeting. And I'm afraid that he'd fall for you."

"Oh, stop, love," he giggled out.

I couldn't help but to smile. "So you're getting in on Monday?"

"Mm hmm," he said, "and I'm so ready. I get to stay with Bren and Zee. Yay?"

I giggled. "They'll calm themselves down for you."

"Yeah right," he said, "why am I not staying with you? I feel like you and Derek aren't as wild."

"You might be surprised."

He gasped. "Addy!"

I threw my head back with a laugh. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding. We really aren't as wild."

"Mm hmm."

"I'm not lying! We don't even have time to be. One of us is always gone, so."

"Ouch. How's that working out for you guys?"

I stayed silent for a second. "I mean, it's fine."

"Okay, not even I believe that."

"It's not as easy as it was," I said, "but we're making it work."

"Are you sure that it's just because of one of you always being gone?" He asked, "or is it because of something else?"

"What do you mean?" I asked, furrowed brows.

"Okay, let me rephrase. Someone else."

I looked up from my notepad, my eyebrows still in a deep furrow.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

But I knew exactly what he was talking about.

Santiago

I heard heels against my floor, making me look over at the door. I pulled my glasses off of my face as I watched my assistant walk over to my desk.

I leaned back in my chair and folded my hands in my lap.

She couldn't make eye contact with me, darting her eyes around the entire room to avoid me.

"Did I have any messages?" I asked, looking up at her.

"No," she quietly answered.

I nodded, sliding my glasses back on my face. She cleared her throat and I looked up at her again, flexing my jaw muscle.

"I'm sorry."

I sighed, shaking my head. "Don't, Catherine."

"No," she said, "I'm just saying. I'm sorry for last night."

"Okay," I said.

She just bit down on her bottom lip. "I just thought that you might have wanted even the littlest thing. I know you're always busy and thought I could take your mind off of it. I was good at it at one point."

She shot me a weak smile, making me sigh and rub my tired eyes. "You're right. You did a good job at taking my mind off of things. I'll admit that. But that was a long time ago, Catherine."

"Santiago, we decided to stop a year ago. It wasn't that long ago."

"Well a lot can happen in a year, Catherine," I said, my impatience growing, "I appreciate you trying to help me, but I'm fine."

She sighed, biting down on her lip. "If you knew you'd only brush me off when I came to you, why did you even keep me around?"

"I wasn't trying to get everyone on my back, that's why."

"You're Santiago King and this is your business," she said, "people know better than to get on your back about something so small."

"It wasn't something small, Catherine."

She furrowed her eyebrows down at me, a look of confusion on her face. "Neither of us were married, so why is it other people's business what we did?"

"It doesn't matter if it's other people's business, goddamnit," I said, standing up, "you should be thankful I kept you around. I could've let you go just like that and not have lost a second of sleep. But I didn't."

She looked up at me, clearing her throat. "Well right about now, I'd rather be somewhere else than here with a man who has nothing nice to say ever."

"I'm not a nice man," I said, "being your friend isn't my job."

"And being your mistress wasn't my job, but I was."

"Watch your mouth," I whispered, flexing my jaw muscle.

She looked up at me, an eyebrow cocked up at me. A small grin pulled at her lips. "You never said that when I was on my knees using my mouth."

I narrowed my eyes. "Get out of my office."

She nodded up at me, her lips pursed together. "Okay."

I watched as she exited my office, a disgusted look on my face.

I plopped back down in my chair and rubbed my eyes. Why hadn't I said yes? I had every reason to.

I braced my elbows on my thighs and fisted my hands together in front of my mouth, pursing my lips together as one person flashed through my mind.
