Disclaimer: I do not own the Heroes of Olympus series or Les Miserables.
Pairing: Jason X Reyna
Note: this is a song fanfic! I absolutely love Les Mis (especially Eponine *the feels*), and I think On My Own goes so well with Reyna's unrequited love.
And now I'm all alone again, nowhere to turn, no one to go to
Without a home, without a friend, without a face to say hello to
But now the night is here
Now I can make believe he's here
Reyna sat back in her chair with a loud sigh. She put her pencil down with another loud sigh, clearing her mind of the war games she was supposed to plan. It was supposed to take the legions' minds off their tense relationship with the Greeks, but Octavian just keep stirring up more turmoil.
Turmoil outside of her. It took so much to keep the legions at bay, but she was just one person. Jason had abandoned her.
And turmoil inside of her. Octavian just kept bringing up Jason's betrayal. His new Greek girlfriend, the spawn of Venus. His betrayal of Reyna. It took all of Reyna's self control not to throttle the bane of stuffed animals.
The moon shined through her office, full and glowing. Unlike Reyna's love life. That reminded her just how sad her life was. No family she could turn to: her sister was with the Amazons, how many miles away and unable to help her. Her mother was a deity stuck in the war. And her father...she would prefer not to think about him.
And she had no friends either. She was the Praetor, everyone looked up to her. She had colleagues, sure, but she never had a friend. Her only friend was going to die in the Mare Nostrum. Jason was the only real friend she'd had at Camp Jupiter.
Though, on late nights like these, when Jason and her had exhausted themselves with work, a smile and some eyes was all it took for the other to lose their self control. Those late night stolen kisses were of the few Reyna lived for. And now there wasn't even a face for her to say hello to.
Sometimes I walk alone at night when everyone else is sleeping
I think of him and I'm happy with the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head
After a few more minutes, Reyna finished her peace speech she would deliver tomorrow along with her new designs for the war games.
After locking up her office she used to share with Jason, she decided to take a walk along the cobbled streets of New Rome. She remembered doing the very same thing with Jason.
Everything was dark, save for her path which was illuminated by the streetlights flanking her path. Everyone was asleep and New Rome was cast into shadows. Some people would think it eerie, but Reyna loved the peace. She could finally think about him.
On my own, pretending he's beside me
All alone, I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close my eyes...
And he has found me
Immediately, an image of Jason conjured itself up. Whether it was in her mind or actually real, Reyna didn't care because...it was Jason.
He was handsome, as to be expected. His eyes sparkled as he exchanged stolen glances with her. His hair glittered in the moonlight every time he turned his head just to smile at her.
He wore faded jeans, the Camp Jupiter T-shirt that made his eyes shine, and the very toga Reyna had taught him how to put on.
It was getting late, but Reyna didn't care. She would walk with him 'til morning, if she were given the choice.
She stopped by her favorite piece of architecture in New Rome : the bridge, stopping halfway on it and leaning on the rail. She felt a pair of arms slip around her waist and a chin resting on her shoulder. Somewhere deep down in her heart, she knew it wasn't real, but she refused to believe it on the surface. Refused to believe that he rejected her. That a daughter of Venus had replaced her.
With all those hurtful, traumatic thoughts racing through her head, taunting her, she closed her eyes, taking deep breaths. She could feel his chest rising and lowering with each synchronized breath they took together.
She opened them finally, and she was met with the glorious sight of Jason's lips gently grazing her knuckles with butterfly light kisses.
He had found her. When Reyna was too deep in their work, he found a way to help her. When she was too strict, he always calmed her. When she needed someone, he was there. When she was lost in the depths of her soul, he was the one who found her.
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever
As she was thinking of how Jason always found her, the lightest drizzle started spiraling down, making tiny impacts on the river she was unconsciously analyzing.
Reyna knew she should head into her quarters already, but she was caught up in her rare, romantic fantasy. Not that she would admit it was a fantasy.
With Jason by her side, his arms around her waist and her head on his broad shoulder, she viewed the world differently. In the rain, the streets shined a dazzling silver, the waters a beautiful mist in the river.
If she looked closer, Reyna could see the reflection of her and Jason. A pair of lovers, not the pair of fearless leaders they were meant to be. Just a darling couple who could endure forever and ever.
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself, and...not to him
And, although, I know that he is blind
Still I say, 'There's a way for us...'
Reyna shook her head stubbornly, not wanting to surface from her fantasy, but she relented to her practical side.
She knew she was talking to herself, of course. Never to Jason. But, still, she pleaded with him silently, relentlessly, frequently to see her. To really see her.
There was a way for them. They just needed to find it.
I love him, but when the night is over, he is gone
The river's just a river
The sun began to rise over New Rome, starting to sparkle onto Reyna's collapsed, defeated form on the cobblestone streets.
The spell was broken, the carriage turned back into a pumpkin.
I love him, but every day I'm learning :
All my life, I've only been pretending
Reyna rose to her feet unsteadily, smoothing her hair and clothes. Greeting families and colleagues along the way back to her quarters, she assumed her Praetor mask.
Leaving behind no evidence of her heartbreak or her burden of unrequited love. That her love was a lie. Pleasant while it lasted, but unwelcome to everyone else.
Without me, his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness that I have never known!
She knew he was okay without her, but she could never be okay without him. She could never fit into his picture perfect world. She just couldn't.
It was too happy, something foreign to her. For example, she and Jason had just become a couple when he had vanished. Just in the brink of happiness, but the scale always tipped back to horrible luck.
I love him
I love him
I love him
Just as she got back to the legions, shouting erupted and she followed Percy, not letting her panic surface.
"Rey! It really is you!" There was only one person who called her that. One person she would know anywhere.
"Jason Grace."
But only on my own.
