Steve admired Y/N for never letting their trauma get the best of them. It was always alright in their book. They were the calm one, the one to wake him up from a nightmare where he lost Bucky over and over and over again. The one to hold him to their chest and slow his breathing to a manageable level and to not fall into the talons of sleep until he did. They were the one that the rest of the team talked with. The rough terrain of another's deepest, darkest thoughts never seemed to phase them; they always had a smart answer, something witty if the situation called for it, or just a shoulder to cry on.
But not that night.
Steve woke to tossing and turning. He turned over from his stiff position on his side to see tears falling onto the pillow on Y/N's side of the bed. He laid there for a moment, shocked into stillness. He then immediately cupped their face in his hands, watching, waiting for Y/N to wake up to his subtle touches. And wake up they did.
A scream ripped out of their throat and they sat up, sobbing. Steve sat up with them, wrapping his arms around them in an instant, trying to hold the choking pieces of Y/N together.
"They- They're he-re." They panted, trying to break free of Steve's clutches.
"Hey, hey calm down. They can't hurt you anymore." Steve's calming voice washed over their senses. The vibrations in his chest against their hands and the sound clearing out their mind. Y/N's arms grasped at his back, trying to anchor their mind in reality.
