Y/N had run. None of the Guardians dared to follow them into the ruins of New York City. They barely knew the place as it was, let alone in this destroyed state. Besides Peter. He decided to run after the fleeing Y/N. He didn't know why they had run, only that he wanted to help them.
He turned a corner, skidding past crumbled concrete and rebar.
"Y/N!" He yelled, trying to be heard over the crackle of fires consuming the city and the screams of citizens as the fire consumed them. From in the distance Peter heard faint yelling of Y/N's own.
"Go back Peter! Leave!" Peter shook his head and continued his sprint through the city, towards the echoes of Y/N's voice. He skidded to a stop when he found them. Standing before a burning building with a toppled 'A' lying on its side. Y/N was hunched over a body of a woman with red hair lying on her back.
"I told you to leave, but you didn't. I gave you the chance!" Their tear-filled yell cut through the smoke to Peter's ears. He approached slowly, kneeling next to their slumped form.
"Wait. You knew her? Personally?" He whispered.
"I knew all of them," they murmured. "At least, I thought I did. Once. A long time ago."
"What were they like?"
Some crumpled copy of a smile crossed their face. "They were going to change the world."
And around them, the world burned.
