Steeling my heightened mood of sensitivity, I glanced longingly out the window as I silently apologised in my head to the sullen man sat next to me. My heart sighed out in pain as it sunk further and further down into my self-made obsidian black caged prison. Closing my eyes I rested my fevered forehead on the cool glass of the car's window, watching through weary hooded lids the trees and vibrant green sceneries as they whizzed past us.
I was so torn up over the decision that I had made that it was constantly playing on repeat in my mind. Sweat began to trickle down my forehead in silent streams, the force I was exerting on my poor mind getting hotter and heavier by the minute. Sighing again, a little louder this time, I nonchalantly wiped the glistening droplets away, my hands every few seconds going up to my face to wipe it clean of the liquid dripping down my face in small spurts.
Was it just me or was it really hot in here!?
JongHyun noticed my endless repetitive actions and without saying anything to me, turned the AC of the car on, his eyes never once leaving the road ahead of him. I peeked a small glance at him to see that although his jaw was clenched in rigid anger, his eyes betrayed his tough facade, his worried pupils darting back and forth between me and the road constantly.
He still cares...
I opened my mouth to say something to him, the silence between us killing me when my gaze unexpectedly flitted onto a young child who had all of a sudden run out onto the road in front of us.
"JONGHYUN WATCH OUT!"
JongHyun's eyes widened in panic at my surprisingly abrupt outburst, his foot slamming down harshly on the brakes instantly. My entire body lurched forward at the quick deceleration we made, my body slamming staggeringly hard into the space next to the dashboard of the car. Without paying much mind to the splitting ache running down my sides and front, I unclipped my seatbelt and raced out towards the child who from the fright of nearly being run over had fallen down to the ground.
"Sweetheart are you okay?" I helped the child to sit up, realising upon coming closer that she was just a young girl, maybe four or five years old.
"I-I..." She was shaking uncontrollably on the floor, her little hands winding painfully around me.
"Hey, hey it's okay." JongHyun had also come out of the car without my even realising it and upon seeing me wince when the young one grabbed onto me, had taken her from my arms, cradling her sweetly to his chest.
"You're safe and sound now. Don't cry, angel." He rocked her little trembling body back and forth, hands running soothing patterns down her back as he held her. "Sshh little one, don't cry anymore. You're safe now."
She hiccuped as big tears rolled down her cheeks, her small hands gripping JongHyun tightly against herself. Even though our current situation was so serious and dangerous, I couldn't help myself from smiling fondly at the cute scene before me.
