"I hope you didn't party too hard last night." My mothers voice complained sternly through the phone speaker, reminding me how thankful I was to be living on my own now. Not that I didn't love my mum more than the world itself, but I just liked being able to make my own decisions rather than having someone else make them for me.
"I didn't drink that much, mum." I groaned, tapping the screen to put the call on speaker as I set my phone down on the center console, putting all of my attention on the road.
"That much." She quoted me, laughing lightly after she spoke. I could help but laugh with her, even at something as small as that.
I carefully turned onto the main road and continued my drive until I reached a red light, eyeing the clock that read: 6:57, which only added a dose onto my anxiety right now. As soon as the light flashed green, I slammed on the gas, forgetting my previous 'careful' mind about driving and remembering my so far perfect attendance for work. I was pushing 60 on a 45 mph zone, but I'd take a traffic ticket over handing my attendance record over to another employee.
I know what you're thinking: what a nerd, who gives a shit about their attendance record? It's not even a big deal!
Well, I don't know what to say to that other than that I am a nerd and I give a shit.
"I'm pulling into work, mum. I gotta go." I finally said, breaking the thick silence between my mum and I as I pulled into the lot of the super market I work at.
"Alright, well, I'll letcha' go." She sing-songed into the phone, shuffling around in the background. "Call me when you get a chance, love ya'."
"Love you, mum."
__________
I patiently stood at my checkout counter, dusting off my Mega Mart apron as I waited for a customer to appear at my register. It's been a pretty busy day today, so it wasn't like I'd have that much free time on my hands.
Speaking of, here comes a customer.
"Hello." I greeted with a smile. "Did you find everything you were looking for okay?"
The older lady with slowly grayling hair simply nodded, not once bothering to make eye contact with me.
There have been too many people who show up here after work or a long day or simply with a bad attitude and it had always been my signature trademark to try and cheer them up.
"The Green Bay Packers? That's my favourite U.S. sports team!" I smiled widely, admiring the older ladies Green Bay Packers top.
"Really? Not many people 'round here know of 'em." She smiled back at me, before she went back to rummaging through her purse.
I scanned the last item she out up, glass cleaner, before announcing her total and grabbing the exact change she handed me. I printed up her receipt before smiling once more and telling her to have a nice day.
I watched her walk off with a smile while I still gloated over turning her mood around so quickly. It always made me feel good when-
"Hello?" A voice called, drawing my attention back to the register. There stood a short man with dark black hair and a navy business suit coating his body. I took note of the dull face he wore and thought up ways to make him smile.
"Hello, sorry about that." I smiled small. "Did you find everything alright?"
"Well I'm here, checking out, aren't I?" He retorted, his thick English accent coming out very rude.
"I suppose you are right." I sighed quietly as I scanned his last two items, telling him the price blankly. He handed me a debit card which I swiped quickly and handed back over to him.
I watched as he seemed troubled, trying to bag the rest of his things and carry what was already bagged.
"I can help you with that, sir." I offered, stepping out from the counter to help bag his toiletries and clothing items.
"I didn't ask for your help, so step back behind the counter where you belong." He hissed, his voice cold and harsh, almost making my skin crawl. He finally got all of his items bagged, lifting them up and nearly walking away.
"Have a good day!" I said, still smiling even though he had been incredibly rude.
"Don't tell me what to do!" He spat back, turning off on his black shoes and exiting the store.
Well, isn't he just a little ray of sunshine, I thought.
"Niall." A voice I recognized as my employee Drew's said.
"Yep?" I spun on my heel, turning to face Drew.
Drew was a muscular boy with dark black hair and bright green eyes, well into his third year of college. He was one of the nicest employees I had and I liked having him around here.
"I'll take the counter for you. Deb told me to let you know you're unloading things onto the shelves for the next hour." He stepped around me, swiping his employee card into the computer and checking himself in.
"Okay, thanks Drew." I smiled softly before retreating to the back room to get the cart loaded with stuff that needed to be properly shelved. I unlocked the door to the room, eyeing the room for the cart before locating it and wheeling it out of the storage room. I pushed the cart across the span of the store until I reached the specific food isle I was looking for. I stopped the cart beside me and began stacking random items into their spots on the shelves.
_________
After about twenty minutes of stocking the shelves with random foods, I felt a pair of eyes on me, causing me to shift uncomfortably and spin around, searching for anybody that could have been around, but I didn't see anyone there, so I turned around and continued my job.
Just a few seconds later, I heard low humming in my ear, making me nervous.
I turned around only to find that there was nobody around me.
I've got to be going crazy, I thought. I shook my head, getting rid of any thoughts that could be distracting me.
I grabbed four bags of potato chips, putting them into their place on the shelves. I turned around to grab more items, but the cart wasn't there.
What the hell is going on here?
I sighed heavily, running my hands over my eyes in hopes that when I opened my eyes the cart would be there.
But, it wasn't.
I leant myself against the shelve, the feeling of utter defeat washing over me as a customer turned onto the isle.
I looked over to them, noticing that they had my cart.
I went to say something, but as soon as I recognized them my breath caught in my throat.
Harry Styles.
