I opened my eyes to a white room. I had an oxygen mask on my face. The room was completely quiet, well except the beeping from the machine I was connected to. Siting there, I looked out a window that was to my left. It was the rainy weather I was used to. The pliter-platers from the rain soothed me.
I heard a knock on the door. "Hi there, Diana. Can I come in?" It was Louis. I slowly nodded. He came in with his hands behind his back. He handed me a teddy bear and sat in a chair beside me. "How are you feeling?" "I'm alright, but I really don't recall what happened." He smiled. My heart fluttered.
"Well, I was walking to Maggie's, a diner, when I saw you. You were sitting on a bench, but it seemed you were having problems. And as I was walking towards you, you feel off the bench. You kept clutching your heart, and I kept calling for help. You honestly scared me. You need to tell me what happened."
I held the bear in my arms. "Thanks for helping me. Um I guess you've been told, um I have asthma. I had heard some news that made me upset and I wasn't thinking and...and...and" I started to cry.
"Breathe, it's fine. Um...I grabbed your phone and called someone called Lauren. She said she was in class and she'd come by later, this lady came and claimed she was your mother. But I didn't let her in. And I kinda told the doctors I was your boyfriend, so they would let me see you."
His cheeks turned pink. "Aww, Louis!" I wiped my cheeks. The door opened. A man in a white coat, maybe 50 years old. "Hello, Ms. Diana. I'm Dr Frailey. How are you feeling?" I sat up. "Better." He grabbed a clipboard and took some notes. He put his hand on Louis's shoulder.
"Now, Mr. Tomlinson, as her boyfriend, I ask you to be attentive to her. Have her inhaler handy. She's okay right now. A nurse will be in shortly to give you the release papers. It seems you'll be able to take Ms. Diana home around 4." He nodded. Dr. Frailey smiled at me and said good bye.
Louis sat beside me smirking. "What are you smirking about now?" He bit his lip. I started to worry. "Just thinking that you got this bad after running. How bad will you get after we have sex? Will you be using your inhaler constantly?" My cheeks heated up. He set off a fit of chuckles.
I slapped his arm. "Shut up. This only happened because I got upset." He smiled and grabbed his school bag. "It's like 10 right now. I need to go to class, I've missed too many days. I'll tell the secretary that you're in the hospital. I'm pretty sure Lauren will be here soon." I nodded.
He leaned down to kiss my lips. They tasted like coffee and a touch of mint. "Diana, how are....."Louis and I pulled back immediately. Lauren stood at the door smirking. Louis turned red and left with a goodbye.
"I thought you guys are friends with benefits, not boyfriend and girlfriend." She sat beside me with her arms crossed. "We are friends with benefits." She scoffed. "Sure, but friends with benefits have sex, not sweet kisses." I rolled my eyes.
"So, what happened? Why did you end up in a hospital bed?" I sighed and took a deep breath. "Veronica gave me some news and I reacted to them in a not so good way." Lauren nodded and put her head in her hands. She looked at me in a worried way.
"What did she say?"
"She told me why she left us. Turns out my so be called saint mother is a whore. She got pregnant before she graduated college with me. And my biological father's parents didn't want me to ruin his life, so Veronica and him broke up. Veronica claimed she was a mess and that she needed help. So she ran to her best friend, who turns out to be the man I've been calling daddy all my life. He claimed that a child shouldn't be raised without a dad. So she and him got married."
