Beau raided the cupboards until he found the big jar of cinnamon and placed it in the middle of the granite island like it was a holy shrine or something.
Still staring at it, Beau asked: “So who is going to video?”
Jay whipped out his phone- he always seemed to have it handy- and raised his free hand. He was videoing then.
“Summer, are you gonna join in?” I asked, thinking she wouldn’t because Daniel was there and she was bound to spit the powder everywhere.
She straightened her posture. “Yep!” She proved me wrong for once.
Once everyone had a handful of cinnamon powder at the ready, Jay hit the ‘record’ button and shouted: “Go!”
All at once, five hands shot to their accompanying mouths and tipped in the brown powder-like substance. It stuck to my tongue and cheeks instantly.
“Dis is ticky,” Summer mumbled through her mouthful, her speech sounding as if her tongue had swollen. With these words, half of the powder spilled out of her mouth and onto the floor.
“Out!” Jay shouted, bringing the camera closer to Summer’s sulky and scrunched-up face.
My tongue worked at the powder sticking the my cheeks, scraping it off bit by bit.
Daniel choked next, spluttering it everywhere, including onto Jay’s face. Beau couldn’t help himself, he burst out laughing and was consequently out of the race.
It was just Luke and me, working our tongues and throat muscles to try and swallow the sticky grains that coated our teeth.
We looked at each other competitively- you know like in westerns when cowboys have a stare-down?- and a plan formed in my mind. Before I let the plan slip from my thoughts, I put it into action; I grinned a toothy smile at him and crossed my eyes, showing him the powder stuck to my teeth and my crazy face.
He spit out the cinnamon, sending it flying through the air, and double over in hysterics.
“Champion!” I yelled, punching the air victoriously. Then I done my little victory, pretending I had a cane in both hands and moving it in a circle. “Booyah, bitches!”
Jay done a close-up of my face and shouted, “The cinnamon challenge winner, is Grace!” before ending the recording. He then clapped me on the back and pulled me into a bear hug. I think Jay was getting a little friendly.
I wriggled out of the hug after a few seconds and smiled up at him. “Just got to go congratulate the runner-up.”
“More like rub it in,” he scoffed.
I shrugged and nodded. It was true.
Strolling proudly across the kitchen to Luke, I assumed a cocky grin. “Oh yeah, who’s the champion?”
He rolled his eyes. It was catching! “Yeah, yeah, you, I know.”
“Told you I could handle anything you weaklings could,” I beamed. Then I remember I probably had stuff stuck to my teeth and snapped my mouth shut.
Luke laughed and shook his head, showcasing his own, coated teeth.
“I’m gonna go brush my teeth,” I mumbled, trying to talk without showing my teeth. I ended up sounding like a granny that had taken out her false teeth. Attractive.
“I might go home and brush mine actually,” Beau announced, running his tongue along his teeth.
Bing.
“Light bulb,” Summer said in her Gru voice, reading my face.
“Why don’t you guys stay over?”
“A sleepover?” Jay asked excitedly, grinning at the prospect.
“Yeah. That’s generally what ‘staying over’ means, Jay,” I teased.
He smiled sheepishly and turned to his brothers. “How about it?”
“That would be splendid,” Beau said, mimicking a posh English voice. “Must check with mother though.”
“We’ll go home now and tell her. Then we can get our stuff and rid our mouths of this sticky powder,” Luke told everyone, gesturing to his mouth.
“See you in a bit,” Summer said to Daniel, squeezing his hand before releasing it and joining me in my ascent up the stairs. The boys disappeared out of the door, leaving the house to Summer and me.
I padded into the bathroom and grabbed my toothbrush, Summer following suit.
“So you like Daniel,” I stated.
“Yeah,” she beamed. “He’s the one that I had my eye on at the shop.”
“He is?!” I asked around my toothbrush as I tried to scrub the cinnamon off the surfaces inside my mouth.
“Mhm,” she hummed.
“Well that turned out well then,” I said, rinsing out my mouth and placing my toothbrush back into the glass.
Summer nodded, swishing the water around in her mouth, making her look like a monkey. I mimicked her face, pulling my ears out and bloating my cheeks.
“You make one sexy monkey,” someone said behind me. I saw in the mirror that it was Luke and dropped my hands from my ears.
I laughed nervously. “Where are the others?”
“In your bedroom,” Luke answered cautiously.
Summer stormed past us. Luke and me followed; worried that she may go batshit crazy on the boys.
“Sure guys, make yourselves at home!” Summer huffed, strutting into my room.
“Thanks!” Beau said, flopping onto my bed and dropping a bag onto the floor.
Summer looked as if she was about to leap onto Beau and start tearing at his throat. Jeez, what was her problem?
“Bitch, calm down!” I ordered, shaking her shoulder. She inhaled deeply and breathed out again.
“You know, bitch isn’t exactly a term of endearment,” she said. Phew.
“Fine. Calm down, shit face.”
We grinned at each other, earning quirked eyebrows from the boys, before walking to join Beau on the bed.
“Are you due?” I whispered to Summer so only she could hear my words.
She shook her head and mimed the words ‘explain later’. Strange girl.
“All fresh breath now, Gracie?” Beau asked, placing his hand between my shoulder blades. “If you are, I know something we could do,” he whispered into my ear.
I nodded and stretched sleepily. “In your dreams,” I mumbled back through a yawn.
