After another 5 miscarriages, Mal and Jay tried for a ninth time, and this time Mal stayed pregnant past 2 months. She got so excited, that she never failed to smile, even in bad times. One late night, Mal and Jay were sitting in the living room on their couch, watching the movie TAG, when a scream sounded from upstairs. Jackson came running down the stairs, and ran out the front door. A car started, and Jackson ran back in. "Jackson, what's the scream about?" Jay asked. "Elena's water broke!" Jackson exclaimed and ran back upstairs. Elena got helped into the car, and Mal, Jay, and Jonathan climbed in the back of Jackson's car, and Jackson took off driving to the hospital. Once they got there, Elena and Jackson were taken back into the hospital, while Jay, Jonathan, and Mal had to stay in the waiting room.
A couple of hours later, a nurse came into the waiting room, and brought Jay, Mal, and Jonathan back to Elena and Jackson. Elena looked and felt exhausted, but she wore a smile on her face. She was holding a baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket, while Jackson held a baby boy wrapped in a blue blanket. "Twins? This is the best moment of my life! Two grandchildren!" Jonathan cheered, and Mal's smile wavered for a split second before hiding her pain. "What are their names?" Mal asked, but was interrupted by the baby Jackson was holding, crying. Jackson couldn't get him to stop crying, so he handed him to Elena. Elena couldn't stop him from crying either, nor could Jonathan. When he was handed to Mal, the baby immediately stopped crying, and giggled as he smiled up at Mal. Mal grinned at the baby, and remembered to stay very gentle with him. "What's his name?" Mal asked.
"He is Spencer Robert, and she is Melissa Rose." Jackson said and Mal nodded. Elena watched her best friend, and how happy she was. She saw the familiar look of hopeful happiness in Mal's eyes, along with a tiny bit of envy. "Jackson, do you think that it's a good idea for a woman who wants a baby really bad to hold our child?" Elena whispered to Jackson. Jackson's mouth dropped open as his wife said that. "Of course it's okay! M is my sister. She wouldn't steal a baby from us." Jackson whispered back to his wife. 2 days later, Spencer and Melissa were released from the hospital and everyone was excited for them to come home.
Mal spent almost every moment of her day with Elena, helping her take care of Spencer and Melissa, and just hanging out with them. A month later, Elena had just gotten her twins to bed, and she left them asleep in her bedroom as she went downstairs. Mal was in her bedroom watching IT, when she heard Spencer start crying. She paused the movie, and went into the hallway. She saw Evie in Elena and Jackson's room with Spencer in her arms. Spencer had a cut in his back, and when Mal said Evie's name, Evie dropped Spencer back into his crib, and ran down the hallway back to her room. Mal picked Spencer up gently, and started rocking him, to try and stop his cries, and Elena screamed as she snatched her baby from Mal. "Stay away from me, and my kids! Stay away from Jackson too!" Elena shouted at Mal. "I didn't do that to Spencer." Mal told her best friend, but it didn't change how Elena felt. "I don't care! Get your own kid you filthy kidnapper!" Elena hissed. Mal left the room, feeling defeated, but she respected her best friend, and continued with her wishes. Mal stayed away from all four of them, and avoided contact with any of them.
Before Jay was headed to the other side of Colorado to sell and buy cattle, Elena announced she had all of her friends and family coming to celebrate the birth of her kids. Mal went with Jay to get the cattle trailer hooked up to one of their semi's. As soon as it was hooked up, Mal bid Jay goodbye, and he left. Instead of going back to the party, Mal gathered two of her ranch hands, and she had them help her build the shed they were needing. Elena's family knew Jackson had a sister, and they asked where she was. "I'm not quite sure. She likes to be outside, and last time I saw her, she was out building the shed. I'm sure we'll see her before the party week is over." Jackson said. Halfway through the party week, Ben noticed Mal wasn't anywhere near the party, and he sought out to find her. He found her in the hay loft, putting square bales in stacks. "Mal? Can we talk for a minute?" Ben asked. Mal nodded, and they sat down on square bales opposite each other. "How come you aren't ever at the party?" "My old best friend got me into trouble with my current best friend, and I'm not too hot with her right now." Mal said. "Mal, I know there's more to the story than that." Ben said. Mal sighed and looked at Ben.
"I caught Evie with Spencer in her arms, and she dropped him in his crib after cutting his back with something. He started crying, and I was trying to calm him down, when Elena came in, assumed I had done it, and then yelled at me to stay away from her, her two kids, and my brother. She also told me to get my own kid, and called me a filthy kidnapper." Mal looked away, and Ben squeezed Mal's hand, and let it go. Ben met Mal's watery green eyes, and she said, "I've always wanted a child to raise as my own, and I've tried. Jay and I have tried 9 times, and all 9 times, it didn't work. 9 miscarriages in a row, including my most current time trying. The doctors did some testing, and told me I can't have a baby." Two tears ran down her face, and she quickly exited the hay loft, leaving Ben alone. Ben didn't see Mal again until nighttime. She came into the house, and saw everyone was downstairs. "Hey M, can you come here for a minute? I need your opinion on something." Jackson asked his sister. "Uhh, I...can't." Mal said. "It will just be quick." Jackson said and Mal saw Elena's face, so she said, "Ask Evie instead. That's your wife's best friend. She'll like her opinion better than mine." Mal said before hurrying up the staircase and shutting the door to her room. "What's with her?" Jackson asked and everyone but Ben shrugged. "I'll go talk to her." Jonathan said.
He went upstairs, and a few minutes later, Mal yelled, "I can't take it anymore!" Before she came downstairs and left the house, slamming the door behind her. A few moments later, Jonathan came down the stairs, and the sounds of a horse running were heard. "What happened?" Jackson asked."I asked her what her problem was, and then said she shouldn't disrespect the people older than her, that have more experience with young human lives, and she started freaking out." Jonathan said.
When Jay got home 3 nights later, everyone was sitting in the living room when he came into the house. He cleared his throat, and everyone turned to look at him, and gave him their attention. He held up an opened envelope before saying, "Could someone tell me what the hell is going on? I come home expecting to see a whole bunch of bills in my mailbox, but what I get instead of bills, is something worse. I get a letter addressed to me, from my wife, telling me that she can't handle anything anymore, and that she's gone. Someone tell me what the fuck happened while I was gone!"
