“Lindsey!” I yell into the phone on a Monday morning. “I need your help. Jordan is calling sometime today about a date and I have no idea what to do or how to act…”
“Wait wait wait, how do you know he’s calling today?”
“Well he said he’d call tomorrow yesterday, and I believe today is now tomorrow.”
There’s a silence on the other side of the phone when suddenly Lindsey bursts out laughing. “Omigosh Ally. You’re so clueless it’s funny.”
“What?” I’m confused.
“In boy time that means he’ll call you on Thursday most likely. Shouldn’t you know this? I mean, you hang out with boys all the time.”
“That’s true, but none of the guys I hang out with actually date, and it’s not like I know when they call their girlfriends if they have any. Anyhow, Jordan’s different. I’m sure he’ll call today, like he said.”
Lindsey chuckles. “Okay whatever you say.” Lindsey clearly doesn’t believe me. “Call me when you’ve landed yourself an actual date, then we’ll talk.”
“Wait! Don’t hang up yet!”
“What?”
“What if he does call today? What do I say?”
Lindsey sighs. “He won’t, but on the really off chance he does, just make it short. He’ll ask if you’re free, you’ll pretend to think for a while, and then you say yes, he gives you the time, you say sure and he says see you then and you hang up.” Okay. I think I can pull that off. Lindsey has practically written the whole speech for me. I quickly write it down.
“Thanks Lindsey.”
“No problem. Talk to you Thursday.”
“Or possibly sooner.”
“Yeah sure.”
We both hang up.
Of course I don’t believe Lindsey’s ‘boy time’ theory about Jordan only calling on Thursday. He was a perfect gentleman. I mean sure, I can imagine Zac putting off a call like that, but not Jordan. No. I’m positive he’ll call today. After all, he said he would.
I bring my phone around with me all day, to make sure I’m able to answer when he calls. I check it so regularly that even PJ notices.
“You expecting someone to call?”
“What? No!” I say it too quickly, embarrassed to be caught waiting for a guy.
“Is it Zac? Because he seemed pretty mad. I’m pretty sure he’s not gonna be calling any time soon.”
“It’s not Zac.” Zac and I haven’t been on good terms since the party last night. Normally we’d be hanging out on the beach today but I guess we’ve both stood each other up. I’m on a different beach with PJ and he’s probably off somewhere with Cooper and Josh.
“You guys really need to get over whatever happened already. By the way, what did happen?”
“It’s a long story.” It really isn’t but I don’t want to explain that I was trying to impress Zac and he was trying to ‘protect’ me. It’s too embarrassing.
PJ doesn’t push it. That’s what I like about guys. They don’t seem to push drama as much as girls do. “So are you gonna tell me who the guy is?” PJ raises his eyebrows and nudges at me teasingly. Of course he’s going to push this issue. He wants to make fun of me for this.
