Chapter 10: Loss Of A Friend And A Comrade

>Peeta’s POV<

            A week has past and we still haven’t found anyone since the killing of Marvel. We are all taking in small bites and sips of the reserved food and water we have in our 3 packs. The games are really starting to bore me. But it’s a lot easier to hunt when we need it because luckily the pack that the District 3 boy had is full of guns and ammunition to reload, but not a lot. Then a loud sound had echoed through the forest. It was the hovercraft!!

But no one had died yet!! Soon it was now hovering in the distance where the Cornucopia was. Nathan brought out his pistol out, and strapped his MP-5K to his pack. We all sprinted until we reached the open field, where the hovercraft was and the other Tributes where all standing. The only Tributes left where the girls from District 3,5,6,7, 9, and 10. Glimmer was among them. The only Districts that had 2 tributes was, Katniss and I, Cato and Nathan, Rue and the guy named Thresh who is very intimidating, and both tributes from District 4.

Then a platform from the hover craft moved down, and there was President Snow, in his usual black suit. “Tributes. Well done for getting this far. Now I bet you are all hungry, and need weapons. Well here they are.” President Snow said. A bunch of packs launched into the middle of the field. Each of the packs had a pistol, a knife and food. “Please enjoy.” President Snow says, with the hovercraft that leaves.

We all look at each other, then the girl from District 5; Foxface already retrieves a pack and leaves. Then all the other Tributes rush in, except our little group. It is an immediate bloodbath. The tributes killing each other without a thought. Both tributes from District 4 die. Thresh easily slips past the other crazy tribute girls and runs off with the pack.

Then District 9 girl dies. The other two girls from District 6 and 7 look at each other, and look back at our group. We all start running back to through the forest. We are clear from the girls and then Nathan says,” Is everyone here?!?!” We look around, but we can’t seem to spot Rue. Nathan then screams, “Rue!! Where are you?!?!” He then does the four note tune, and the birds immediately copy.

(3 Minutes Later)

>Nathan’s POV<

            We split up to find Rue. If we couldn’t find her we would meet back where we started which was the pile of large rocks not too far behind me. I do the four note whistle and then I hear Rue’s voice scream, “Nathan!!” I then ready my pistol and start running towards Rue’s voice, “Rue!!” I scream, moving as fast as I could to her. “Nathan!! I’m here!!” Rue screams. When I round the tree, there is Rue, trapped in a really thick net.

            I then start ripping the thick net away with my knife. Finally when I get her out, I pull her into an hard embrace. “Are you okay?” I ask. She nods and reply and when we start to walk she say, “I’m so sorry for getting lost. I don’t know what wo-.“ She fell down with a spear in her back. I turn around, seeing the girl from District 10 with a proud smile. She then goes to shoot me with her pistol, but I then quickly draw my gun, and shoot her directly in the head.

            With that she pulls the trigger as she falls back on the ground, and the bullet grazes my arm. I let out a painful yell, and fall to my knees. I then drag myself towards Rue. I pull the spear out of her back as quickly and not as painfully. I rest her head on my lap. I wipe the tears straying from her eyes. “Rue it’s going to be okay. Stay with me.” Rue smiles and says, “You have to win.”

            He final breath fades and I put my forehead against hers, crying my eyes out. She didn’t deserve to die. I put my head up, seeing beds of flowers around me. I picked up as many as I could, making sure she would be lying in peace. I set the flowers around her. Then right in front of my eyes, a Rue flower was blossomed by itself right by an old tree.
