TW: mentions of self harm scars

Dan's POV

All my friends at school finally calmed down after my 'mysterious disappearance' which I told them was just my brother being ill and me needing to take care of him since my mum was at work too much. Obviously, only Phil knows the real story.

"Hey Dan!" Phil comes charging down the corridor, weaving his way round all the other people as I shut my locker. He reaches me and he suddenly goes quieter. Is he... blushing?  "So I was wandering, are you free this weekend? 'Cause if you are, I wanted to know if maybe you'd want to hang out, I know this cool place I want to take you. I mean you obviously don't have to if you don't want to-"

I cut his rambling off with a hand on his shoulder and nod.

"I-I'd love t-to."

Phil face lights up and he jumps up and down slightly on his feet while clapping his hands excitedly.

"Cool! Get to my house by 6pm on Saturday. Can't wait!" He hugs me quickly before darting off towards his next class while shouting goodbye over his shoulder. I smile to myself before wandering off myself, impatiently waiting for the weekend.

Phil's POV

I spring out of bed in the morning as I remember it's Saturday and spend the entire morning getting ready. I don't know what I'm freaking out about, we're best friends - there's that sting again - so I have nothing to worry about. Yet here I am, panicking over hanging out with him. Why do I do this to myself?

After a while, I settle on black skinny jeans and a blue short sleeve top with a Nyan-cat aesthetic pattern. I quickly pull on some random dark blue converses just in time for Dan to knock on the door.

"Phil! Your boyfriend's here!" mum shouts up to me and I wince at the possibility that Dan heard that. I take one last look in the mirror before heading downstairs and opening the door.

And holy crap.

I've already admitted to myself that I have a crush on Dan, but I'm trying my best to push it away for the sake of our friendship and my non-existent dignity and he is not helping!

In front of me is what I like to call perfection. Gorgeous straightened brown hair, glimmering chocolate eyes and a smile that outshines the sun.

"H-Hey," Dan smiles, shoving his hands in his black jean pockets, pushing the sleeves of his black leather jacket up slightly. Mum comes through and smiles at Dan to say hi, to which he nods slightly.

"Aren't you a bit hot in that jacket Dan? We're in the middle of June!" She laughs. Dan laughs along with it.

"It's s-surprisingly t-thin and I'm n-naturally cold a-anyway." he responds, shrugging it off as my mum laughs slightly and nods again.

"Well, have fun then you two, you know where you're going, right Phil?" She asks me and I roll my eyes while sighing a yes as Dan chuckles to himself. "See you later." Mum kisses me on the forehead and I try desperately to dodge her but she wraps me in a hug anyway. Dan might as well be rolling on the floor with laughter while my cheeks flush with pink. I finally escape her grasp and get me and Dan out the door, lightly shoving him as he fails to contain his laughter.

After about an hour of travelling on the bus and walking, we finally reach our destination. Just before us is a small woodland area that you need to pass through to get to where I want to take Dan. I manage to convince Dan to close his eyes (he covers his eyes with his right hand for good measure). I reach out my arm in front of him for him to hold on as I guide him through the woodland but he takes my hand instead. I'm so glad his eyes are closed so he can't see me blushing. It takes a little while but, after Dan walking into multiple trees as a result of my terrible hand-i-coordination, we finally make it. I whisper to Dan for him to open his eyes so, slowly, he lowers his hand and opens his eyes. I try to drop his hand but he keeps hold of mine. Looking over at his face, I see his eyes have widened in awe.

We stand on a cliff edge, the sun on the horizon , casting beautiful colours of red, pink, orange and yellow across not only the sky but also the sparkling sea below that washes up onto the golden sand.

Dan starts to walk forwards to the edge of the cliff, taking me with him as our hands are still connected. We come to a stop at the very edge and Dan lets go of my hand, which made me a little upset, I'm not going to lie.

"H-Holy shit Phil, t-this is b-beautiful..." he whispers.

"Yeah, I know." I respond, smirking slightly as my gaze doesn't leave Dan until we both sit down on the grass. After a few seconds, Dan takes his leather jacket off, revealing his arms. Both arms are free from bandages now, showing the scars that scale the inside. His left arm contains one long scar up his arm, slicing through the line with the faded centre on his wrist while his right arm shows the long scar as well as lots of smaller, horizontal scars down the top half of his forearm. I only let my eyes rest on them for a second and quickly divert my gaze back to the sunset.

We spent a while in a comfortable silence until Dan suddenly pipes up rather quietly.

"Thank y-you."
