Jevine opened the door to the cabin and let Tristan inside.
"Which bunk is yours?" He asked, looking at how neat the place looked.
"Whole back corner bunk. It's bug filled, so no one wanted it." Jevine said, flicking a spider off as she spoke.
"I'm guessing you're not as grossed out by bugs as the others?" He teased.
"I own an insect farm. You don't bother them, they don't bother you." She smiled. She dug into her bag and pulled out a thin, black scarf.
"Are you cold, or what? It's summer time." Tristan asked. Jevine didn't answer. She wrapped it around her neck, making sure her left side was high enough to cover her scar, then unzipped her jacket and took it off.
"It's just who I am. Not much to say." She said, holding the scarf against her scar.
"I won't judge. So, what do you do for fun?"
Jevine thought for a second. Ever since her father died, and the reason he died which Jevine hated to think about, she never did anything. Before, she practically had a childish behavior. But she didn't want to lie to him.
"Uh, I don't do much anymore." She said honestly.
"Why not? You become a rebellious teen like the rest of us?" He laughed.
"More like traumatized." She mumbled to herself, once again, folding the scarf against her scarf, remembering the exact scene of how she got it. Tristan being observant, noticed this.
"Are you hiding something on your neck?" He said abruptly. This shocked Jevine that he noticed and she began to tense.
"Well, are you? I don't mean to seem pushy, but you don't seem ok right now, and you keep rubbing your neck." He pointed out.
"Its nothing. How much longer until dinner?" She asked, looking at her watch which read 3:30.
"In an hour, but it ends at 6 so we have plenty of time. You wanna do something while we keep waiting?" He asked, completely forgetting about what the topic just was.
"Um. Tell me about yourself. What makes you, you? I'm sure your life is better than mine." She said, betting that it was.
"Well, I'm the middle child of three. I have an older sister and a younger brother. My mom works as a middle school counselor, and my dad owns a small town business. I'm ok in school, but that's only because I'm not really trying. That about sums me up. What about you?" He said. Jevine sat in silence for a solid minute before she spoke.
"Well, I'm a perfect A' student in school. I'm an only child, and will be. My mom is treasurer for some city company. Not much about me to know." She said, skipping her dad before the thought of him brought her to tears.
"... What about your dad?"
I knew I couldn't dodge it. She thought to herself. She sat with her head hanging low, not wanting to answer him.
"I won't pry anymore. You can tell me when you're ready." Tristan said, noticing how hollow she became at the mention of her father.
"You wanna go join the others at the Wolf cabin now? The others probably wanted to talk to us."
"Even if we did go there, you'd talk with everyone while I sat in the corner planning my escape. I bet I could get out without anyone, including you, noticing." She said with a sly grin.
"Oh, challenge accepted. I just won't take my eyes off you." He teased back.
"Don't let Zachary see that. He'd just annoy me to death about a subject I want to stay far away from." She said, getting up and walking out the door. Tristan followed behind and they both arrived to a very noisy cabin. This time, Tristan opened the cabin door, and everyone inside froze. Tristan nudged Jevine inside. She pouted and sat in the corner.
"Don't go silent just because we walk in! What did we interrupt?" Tristan said excitingly.
"A good game of truth or dare, that's for sure! Everyone's revealed something that haunts them from the inside out. A true thing they feel guilty of. And now, it's your turn! Along with Jev- where'd she go?" Ryan said. Tristan looked around and saw her no where.
"Well, I lost that bet big time." Tristan said in disbelief.
"What bet?" Val asked.
"She said that she can sneak out of any cabin without anyone, including me, noticing. I get that I would know. I obviously lost. I'm gonna go find her."
"Oh no you're not. You're gonna stay here and tell us about her! You're the only one who's actually been able to get her to talk, so you can be the messenger! So, what did she tell you?" Sevaline said, blocking the doorway.
"Fine. Well, she's..."
While Tristan told them about her, and what she said and acted like, Jevine was outside, listening.
And that's why I don't trust anyone anymore. They spill your secrets, or just what you said, to anyone they want without asking your permission. and he's just like everyone else. She thought, walking with her hands in her Jean pockets. A single tear fell from her eye as she felt betrayed for the second time, but not as harsh as the first time.
That's why I didn't tell him about my dad, and how he died, and how it was my fault for choosing the wrong boyfriend.
