"Jevine! Wake up! You need to eat your breakfast!"
Jevine got up out of her bed and ran out to see her mother hard at work to make the house look appealing.
"What's the occasion mom? Is our over judgmental neighbor coming over?! I need to clean my room if she is!"
"What?! No, no Jevine. I'm just... Cleaning up because I'm bored. That's it." Amber, her mother, said as an excuse. Jevine didn't fully believe it, but brushed the thought of as she ate her breakfast her mother prepared for her.
"You have any plans today mom? I can help if you want." She offered, placing her bowl in the sink.
"Oh, you don't need to worry. I'm fine and don't have any plans."
"Alright. Also, when is Latham coming home? He's been on that cruise with his mean girlfriend for a month already."
"He should be back this week. And his girlfriend is not mean. She is a sweet angel."
"Haha. I know mom. I just like teasing with calling her mean since she always has Latham now. I miss him." Jevine playfully pouted. Her mother laughed, then told her to go relax in her room. After a while, Jevine was called back out, but before she left, she got a text from her boyfriend, Alvar, saying:
I'm sorry.
Jevine questioned the meaning of what he was sorry for, but ignored it at the time, answering her mother's call.
"Yes mom? Do you need something?"
"Could you reach up there and get me the spices? I'm too short." Amber asked.
"You think I can reach?! I'm only about two inches taller than you. I'll try though." Jevine said. She walked up to the tall cabinets and tried tracing for the spices for her mother, which were just out of her reach.
"You need some help there little Jev?" A man's voice asked. A hand reached higher than Jevine's and got the spices down.
"Thanks dad-..."
Jevine hadn't even realized until she turned around and saw her father standing in front of her. Tears started to sell up in her eyes. She quickly wrapped her arms around her father, relieved that her father had made it home alone from the military.
"You're home! Your back home dad!" Jevine said, crying her tears off joy and happiness.
There was then a knock at the door, and Amber went to answer it.
"Oh, hi Alvar. You came at a very personal time. Do you mind coming back la-"
Jevine heard he mother's voice cut off by her grunt and a thud. Both Jevine and her father turned to the door and saw Alvar and the out cold Amber lying on the ground.
"You..." He said, stomping slowly into the house.
"Alvar... What's going on?" Jevine said, stepping up to Alvar.
"I'm sorry Jevine, but you can't stop me." Alvar said in a deep voice. Before Jevine or her father could react, Alvar had taken out a knife and slashed Jevine across the left side of her neck, leaving a bleeding gash trailing from her ear, down her neck. She fell to the ground, her blood pooling around her.
"Who are you to do that to my daughter?!"
Jevine's father ran to Jevine's side and helped her sit up.
"And who are you to leave my only brother in the battleground?! You left him there to die!"
From out of his pocket, Alvar pulled out a gun and shot Jevine's father with all of the ammunition he could. Jevine's screams filled the room.
Alvar lowered his gun to his side and looked back at Jevine. A smug smirk plastered across his face.
"I'm sorry, but now we've both lost someone very dear to us."
He walked away, leading Jevine's broken family on the ground.
.
.
"There, now you have my life story." Jevine finished, hugging her knees up against her chest. Shane sat silently, processing what Jevine had said.
"You better not tell anyone what I told you. If you do, I can promise you that I will never forgive you. It's bad enough that I told you and I don't trust you."
"I won't tell anyone. I'm sorry for what happened." Shane said.
"Sorry... That's what everyone says. It never means anything, so stop saying it!" Jevine chuckled in a very uneasy way.
"Well... It's the human instinct to say that." Shane excused.
"It's shouldn't."
Jevine looked out the window and saw the others coming towards the cabin. Jevine quickly pulled on her jacket and hood over her head. Shane then to realized that they were coming and went outside to greet them.
"Hey Shane! Jevine giving you a hard time?" Lola asked.
"No, but you should watch what you say and do around her. Don't question it." Shane said.
Meanwhile, Jevine was inside and heard what Shane had said to them.
That's the first time someone's kept my secret.
