Two days have passed since that phone call.
This is the longest Spring Break ever.
I went back home yesterday. Troy texted me of how clear the place was of any sign of my uninvited guest. I still kept wracking my brain at the fact that Troy so suddenly declared that he wanted to become my...what? Teacher? Mentor? Personal trainer? Whatever it will be, he wants to help me out. I'm just going to go it with and maybe, just maybe, that will help me understand his peculiar personality more.
Someone knocked at the door. I ran to it and opened it wide as my smile. Hayden looked at me with a grin mirroring mine before he walked in and pecked me on my lips.
"What are you up to, today?" He closed the front door behind him and followed me to the kitchen.
"I don't know, yet." I shrugged as I grabbed the small knife again to cut the rest of the chicken breasts in halves. I glanced at him to see him watching me as he sat at the island, elbows up top and shoulders hunched. I smirked and got back to my task.
An hour later, we were sitting at the same place. Hayden was smiling at his empty yet dirty plate then looked up at me with the same amusement he was sunk deep into from the moment he laid foot in my kitchen. "You totally don't look like someone who can cook, that's for sure."
I laughed. "Sometimes, you need to know the basics when you're on your own most of the time." I grinned.
"You? On your own?" He faked a shock over his face.
"Living with my aunt, remember? She's not exactly the stay-at-home type of woman. She's away a lot." My eyebrows danced up and down at my last sentence.
He laughed through his nose and made a light hand gesture towards me. "Still, you don't look like it." My chest puffed and I couldn't resist smiling. "What el-"
The doorbell cut through Hayden's words. His face held the question if I was waiting for someone but I just shrugged and got up. In the doorway stood Troy. My eyebrows scrunched together, inwardly asking him what he was doing here. He raised a brow at me. "You were supposed to work on your defensive skills, remember?"
My shoulders sagged. "Shit. That was today?"
"Yes." His head snapped up in Hayden's direction.
I let my hand run through my hair. "Okay, but..." I looked back at Hayden. I don't really know what it is that we are going to do. "You wanna come?" Before he got a chance to answer my sudden question, I turned to Troy. "Wait, where exactly are we going?"
He searched my face for a minute. I thought about closing the door in his face and going back inside and continue my nice time until the day is through. Such a sweet thought, only to be ruined by him speaking up. "The other night, I noticed you have the trees overgrown, making a nice cover from anyone on the outside to see, so we will do it in your backyard."
"What?" A surprised chuckle choked its way out of my throat. "We're training. In the backyard of my house." I waited for him to say otherwise.
"Yeah, why not?" He squared his shoulders as he took his way inside and inspected the place that surrounded him. He looked around and walked through the kitchen until he found the back door. Hayden and I were walking silently behind him. When he stepped outside, he smiled triumphantly. "See? It's a pretty big place you've got. Plenty of room to move and run and fight. And the trees are high enough for no one to see past." He stated his reasons as he circled my aunt's yard.
"But what if someone hears?" Honestly, I don't know why shouldn't it be at my place, I just don't want it here. "This is a pretty quiet neighborhood. Couldn't you have picked somewhere else...in the woods, maybe?"
