"Um...I thought I was staying in the guest room next door...?"

Surprises pop up often in my life. And they're real surprises, because no one ever tells me that "you have a surprise coming." They always just come out of no where. Most of the time they're bad, but other times they're good.

This time just makes me feel excited and nervous, and I'm not sure whether or not this is a positive or negative thing.

On one hand, I will be protected more easily under Kason's care. But on the other hand, my emotions and physical attraction to him will probably only enhance to the tenfold.

"This way, you can feel safer. Besides, I like the idea of us sharing my bed," Kason says with a smirk.

I try to hide my blush and stick on a glaring expression. "Don't bet on any funny business, buddy. This is just a living quarters agreement, alright?"

He rolls his eyes. "You make it sound so boring when you say it like that." I watch as he jumps a little bit and falls onto his bed. "This is supposed to be a fun thing too."

I sigh and drop my duffle bag and last box onto the ground, flopping down onto the navy blue beanbag. "Yeah, I guess I'm just still a little bit rattled by all of this. I mean...did your dad really know my parents?"

At the mention of his father, Kason's faces hardens and his jaw strains. He releases an annoyed breath. "I don't know. Maybe. I'm talking to him tonight about the incident at school. I'm sure his dumbass 'employees' - as he calls them - did it to scare you. Don't let it get into your head. Like I said, no one is going to come near you while I'm here."

I feel my stomach flutter at his words, but nod my head as I try to hide it. I pull my knees up to my chest and rest my chin on them.

I could argue with Kason more to allow me to stay in the guest room, or even in Kassidy's room, but I guess I just don't want to argue with him. I like the idea of sharing a room with him...and a bed. And not in a sexual way (mostly). In a safe way. He makes me feel secure when he wraps his arms around me. It's a cheesy line, but I feel invincible when he's around. And it makes it that much easier to sleep. In fact, I don't think I'd be able to sleep at all in this house without him by my side anyway. I'd feel vulnerable.

It's quiet for a long moment before I decide to speak up, trying to ease both the tension and Kason's anger.

"I think forever is a super ironic word, but I love it."

Kason sits up slightly and gives me an incredulous look. "What?"

"Forever. It's ironic," I state. "Don't you think? It's just a word that humans made up. 'Forever' doesn't actually exist. But I love it because it gives people hope in this crazy, messed up world."

Kason stares at me for a long moment before nodding slowly in agreement. "Yeah...I guess you're right."

"I typically always am," I quip.

He rolls his eyes. "You—"

"I dated you for not even a month, you psycho! You were basically just a free trial that I cancelled!" A voice booms incredulously just outside the room.
