In The Drawer

Lying in the drawer were a couple things. A ripped doll, a broken Barbie, a twisted slinky, a popped ball, and a pair of scissors.

I closed the drawer quickly, praying that what I saw was my imagination, or possibly the light.

I looked at the front of the drawer before opening it again. "Broken Drawer" was scrawled across the dark wood in black Sharpie.

I took a deep breath and scolded myself for not noticing that before openings it the first time. Maybe then, I would have left the drawer alone thinking, Oh... this drawer is broken, it probably doesn't open.

But, if I hadn't opened it the first time, I wouldn't have been able to see the problem my daughter was having.

I had to open the drawer again. I had to make sure that I wasn't just seeing things. All those broken items...they were broken, and that's probably the only thing that you think they have in common... but it's not.

I slipped the drawer open again and my worst nightmares had been confirmed.

I let out a small squeak as I sank to the floor and began to cry.

All of those broken items were covered in red liquid. But the scissors blades were what covered the other things. They were all covered in blood.

I reached a shakey hand into the drawer and pulled out the sharp object that had taken my daughter's skin without me realizing it.

I opened them, so the blades were no longer touching, and ran a finger along the smooth metal surface.

And then, everything went into autopilot. I closed the scissors and threw them on the floor. I jumped up and quickly walked the few paces to the door and screamed for Pete, the tears still streaming freely down my face, coming harder and faster as each second ticked away.
"PETE!" I screamed, falling to the floor in the doorway.

"PATRICK!?" Pete called back. He appeared at the foot of the stairs. And when he saw me, a look of pure shock and worry crossed his face. He ran up the stairs and took me in his arms. "What's wrong?" he asked quickly.

I couldn't talk. I was sobbing so hard I was getting choked up and could hardly breathe.

"Patrick, look at me... breathe... breathe, baby... I'm here." he hugged me tightly.

I shook my head and put my hands to his chest, pushing him away. "R-Raz-z-zel!" I finally managed to choke out.

Pete cocker an eyebrow. "What about her?" he asked.

"B-bl-bl-lood!" I stuttered, the tears were like a flood had washed over me.

"Patrick...?" Pete asked, his voice becoming shakey.

"You were right! I didn't want to believe you, but, you were right!" I rambled quickly, losing my breath even more rapidly. I couldn't breathe and I could feel myself growing dizzier.

Pete put his hands on both my shoulders and looked me in the eyes. "Patrick, I need you to calm down! What was I right about? What didn't you want to believe? WHAT'S WRONG!?"

I took a deep breathe, which didn't help, and looked down. "S-sh-she isn't truly happy."

Pete tilted his head. "Trick...?"

"She's harming herself."

His eyes widened. "H-how d-do you kn-know?" he stuttered.

I stood up and pulled him into our daughters room and showed him the scissors and drawer.

-Pete.POV-

As Patrick is showing me the "Broken Drawer," I couldn't help but recognize a small bear Patrick and I had gotten Razzel when we first brought her home. We took her shopping and she begged up for that thing.

I lifted it out of the compartment and sat on the bed next to Patrick. He clung the bloody scissors to his chest like his life depended on it and continued to sob.

I sighed and took the scissors and replaced them with the bear.

He instantly wrapped his arms around it and hugged it tightly, falling into my open arms.

I tried to comfort him, but he wouldn't listen.

He'd sit against my chest, hugging the bear to his and stared into the nothingness. Every once in a while he'd nuzzle the bears fur for a little extra needed comfort and go back to crying.

I stared at the scissors which were now lying on the ground, as I cradled my husband. They did this to us... to Patrick... to me... but mostly... To Razzel. They had claimed her skin as their own and began feeding away at it. And Razzel let them.

I was disappointed, sad... at the fact that my own daughter thought she couldn't come talk to me or Patrick about an issue.

Just then the front door opened and we heard Razzel calling goodbye to her friends.

Patrick stood up and I could see a look of blank expression on his face as he let the bear fall to his side along with his arms. I stood up and followed Patrick out of Razzel's room, who froze once she saw us.

She took one look at Patrick's face and I.instantly noticed something was wrong. "Who died?"

"My soul." Patrick said quietly as he stared at her. He held out his arms for a hug, and the bear went along.

Razzel's eyes widened as she looked at the bear. Then she ran into Patrick hold and whispered, "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry!" repeatedly.

Patrick hugged her back. He held her close as they both sunk to the floor, both of them a sobbing mess at this point.

"Why?" Patrick whispered as he put a hand under her chin so she could look him in the face.

"I-I..."

"Why couldn't you talk to me?" Patrick interrupted.

"I-I..."

"Or your Panda!?"

Razzel broke down in sobs again and hugged Patrick tightly, burying her face in his shirt.

I walked over and I wrapped them both in my arms and pulled them closer.

Razzel didn't move from Patrick. She kept her face in his shirt as Patrick leaned his head on my shoulder.

They ended up falling asleep that way. I picked them up one at a time and carried them down to the couch. Then Razzel came shortly after.

Patrick woke as I was lying a blanket over them. He hugged her and stroked the back of her head as he kissed her head. "I love you, Raz. I love you so fucking much!" he whispered.

I gave him a sympathetic smile as I kissed his cheek.

He just stared blankly into nothingness as I sat down on the floor.

Then I heard movement. I looked over my shoulder and saw Patrick gently grab her arm and look at it. He frowned a bit.

"What?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I don't understand it," He said, placing her arm back where it wad around him.

"No one will until she explains tomorrow."

"But... I don't understand how she can't be happy. We give her every thing. We do so much just to see a genuine smile." He looked down at her and sighed.

"Maybe it's not us."
(How many of you remember that little incident after the hospital where Pete told Razzel he loves her and she just breaks down crying? I finally figured out what this all leads up to! And it all goes back to this! :) So you'll get an explanation! And I may have told some of you it was just sensitivity, but it was something more...
