You wince as the cold, wet towel comes into contact with the cut on your cheek. The disinfectant stings like hell, but Jungkook doesn't back down, even when you hiss and your face contorts in pain.

You're settled on the kitchen island with him standing in between your legs, a bowl of water and a bottle of disinfectant next to you. You squeeze your eyes shut while he cleans the wound on your cheek, gritting your teeth and gripping the counter as you try to coax yourself through the pain. It almost distracts you from the heavy silence that hangs in the air – almost.

Jungkook hasn't said a word since he opened up the door and it's killing you.

When you came to him like you always did, needing his help and seeking the comfort of his companionship, he didn't even seem that surprised. The look on his face when he saw you standing there in front of him, a cut adorning your cheek and bruises littered on your arms... it told you more than words ever could.

You wish he would just say something, anything, but he just keeps tending to the wound with a tremendous focus. While the stinging is dying down, you're increasingly hurt by the way he keeps avoiding your eyes.

Finally, he slowly puts the towel down, gaze dropping down with it. It has light red stains, but he doesn't make an effort to clean them up. He just sighs, still avoiding any form of eye contact. "What happened?" he then asks, finally breaking the pained silence. It's less than you expected, but at least it's something.

"I fell," you lie softly, looking down at his hands as he fidgets with the wet towel. Admittedly, it's not the best lie, but it's pretty difficult to think of a good one when you're fighting through tears all the way to his apartment.

He scoffs, shaking his head. You swear you can see his fingers trembling ever so slightly as he fidgets with the towel. "Come on," he insists, finally looking up at you. His eyes are brimming with worry, his brows furrowed into a deep frown. "Please tell me what really happened," he begs, his voice soft.

You stare at him for a moment, biting your bottom lip. Your boyfriend's shouting echoes through your mind, the fear you felt just an hour ago making your body go rigid. You try to relax, try to reason with yourself – you know that he just has to calm down for an hour or so and you two will be back to normal again. He just has his moments.

You know Jungkook will only get upset when you tell him what really went down and you don't need that right now – you just need him to comfort you. "Jungkook, I swear," you finally insist. "I really did fall."

A defeated sigh escapes his lips and he leans his forehead on your shoulder. It allows you a moment to take a break from your poker face and you use it to blink away the tears swimming in your eyes, taking in a deep breath. You fight the urge to comfort him, to take your hands off of the counter and put them around him, knowing it'll only make this worse. You hate lying to him like this. You hate deceiving your best friend in the world, hiding things from him, especially when it's about a relationship that's important to you – but you know that there's no other way to maintain the peace in your life.
