The coffee shop is starting to empty, people – couples, mostly – starting to shuffle outside. It's Valentine's, so couples have been permeating every domain of daily life today with their exaggerated displays of loooove. You'd been confronted with them from the moment you walked out of your dorm. They were just everywhere. And they all seemed just a little more in love, wanted to show it off just a little more than usual.

Oh, wait, did you say little? You mean a lot. Like, to a nauseating extent.

As the day continued, the number of couples seemed to be increasing, too. At lunch, everyone was pairing up, gazing into each other's eyes while you sat with your friends, trying to keep your food down. And it got even worse as the hours ticked by and the sky turned darker – people are getting ready for their dates by now, with some couples already out on one, thus being even clingier.

It is, at a minimum, very annoying. And it's getting worse by the minute.

"What do you mean, you can't come?"

You're sitting at one of the coffee shop's tables by the window to wait for your friend May, who just told you she'll have to cancel your plans. You'd been looking forward to it, too – having fun drinking on a Tuesday evening and giggling at the desperate efforts of those still hunting for that 'special' someone to sleep with just for Valentine's.

"I meant that I can't come," she says, a regretful tone in her voice. "I'm sorry, honey. I just have this huge assignment and I thought I'd have it done by today, but..."

You let out a sigh, drawing figures on the wooden surface of the table with your index finger. "You don't," you fill in when she trails off, chewing on your lip. "It's fine, I understand," you say, though your voice doesn't really match the message.

"Let's take a rain check, okay? The deadline's tonight, so let's go out tomorrow and buy all the chocolate that's on sale and just stuff our faces."

Even though you're a bit down, mind already running as you try to come up with things you can do tonight instead of getting drunk on your own, you can't help but let out a laugh. "Sounds pretty good."

"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow, then?"

You're nodding, a small smile tugging at your lips. "Yeah," you say through a sigh. "Of course, Five. Good luck on your assignment!"

"Thanks, hun," she softly says. "Sorry again. I hope you can have some fun tonight."

"Me, too," you mumble. "And it's fine, seriously. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Bye!"

After hanging up, you put your phone back on the table, just sitting there for a moment and staring ahead of you. There's soft music playing in the background, songs that you're guessing are straight from one of those Spotify coffee shop playlists. Four baristas are bustling behind the counter, seemingly in a rush even though there are almost no customers around. The ones that are still here mostly sit on their own, reading a book, typing on their laptops, or scribbling in notebooks. Students, like you, but none you recognise.
