After the lesson, the classroom was empty but Anne stayed to ask Miss Stacy a question.

Gilbert wore his coat and waited for her in front of the door.

"Hey Gil!" Anne said as she got closer to him. She wore her coat and took her slate and books. Gilbert opened the door and tried to smile at her, while he wasn't quite feeling it.

While they were walking, Anne couldn't think of anything else but why he wasn't ok. He didn't talk and his eyes were stuck on the ground.

"Hey, um.. Gilbert are you alright?" she finally said, her blue eyes full of concern.

"Yes, yes I'm ok" he said without looking at Anne.

She knew he was obviously lying. But why? Why would he lie to her? They always trusted each other about everything. Why would he not trust her that time? She grabbed his wrist and stopped him.

"Gilbert, please I know something is bothering you. I desperately want to help you. I can't see you like that." Anne said as she looked in his sad, although still dazzling eyes. Gilbert sighed.

"I just.. I can't.. Today I saw you and Billy Andrew sharing a glance and.." he started saying. Anne was about to talk but he continued.

"Do you.. Do you like Billy now? I mean don't you-" he said but Anne didn't let him finish.

"Gilbert! No! I would never, ever, think of Billy Andrews in that way! Ever!" she nearly shouted frustrated.

"Can't you see I'm in love with you?" Anne whispered, surprised at herself for admitting a thing like that.

"You.. You do?" he asked as his eyes softened and gave her a slight smile.

"Of course I do, Gilbert. You're the person I feel safe with the most! You're my kindred spirit!" she said and stepped forward. A tear fell down Gilbert's cheek as he hugged her.

"Oh Anne. I'm so sorry that I thought about something like that. I just.. I feel like you're the only person I have left..I consider Sebastian as my family too, of course, but.. this is different. I love you too Anne, I really do" he cried out.

Anne was confused. She had never seen Gilbert like that. She hugged him tightly and, after she let him, she gave him a warm smile.

"Would you like to walk in the woods with me, just for a little?" she asked as her hand cupped his face.

"I would love to" he said and took her hand from his face into his own hand, like it was made of glass.

Anne and Gilbert walked between the green trees and colorful flowers careless. Anne finally felt completely happy. Like everything was fixed. Oh how she wished Gilbert would kiss her, right there, right that moment.

"Oh how romantical it would be!" she thought.

Suddenly Gilbert stopped and looked into Anne's eyes. Something was telling Anne he had the same thought she had some moments ago. Anne couldn't focus in anything but his eyes. Those dazzling, beautiful eyes. Her heart skipped a beat. Gilbert started to lean closer and she stood on her toes to get closer him. It was all perfect. She convinced herself she could almost hear Gilbert's heart pounding inside his chest, which was true indeed. He leaned closer and closer and closer..

"Anne! Anne are you alright?" Gilbert asked worried. Anne had fallen into the river next to them during her attempt to stand on her toes.

After he was sure Anne was ok, a chuckle came out of his mouth, giving her both joy and anger.

He helped her get up and took off his coat. Then, he put his arms around her as he helped her wear it. She let a laugh out which gave him joy. He placed his fingers ever so gently on her cheek. His eyes never leaving hers.

"I should go home change" Anne whispered awkwardly. Gilbert nodded as he agreed and smiled.

"Let's get you home then" he said and took their books, that they let fall some while ago during their romantic moment.

When they reached Green Gables, Anne took off Gilbert's coat and handed to him.

"Thank you Gilbert" she said.

"Oh bringing you home is always my pleasure" he said and a big smile crossed his face.

"No, I mean thank you for today.. Generally.." she said and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

"I'll see you tomorrow" they both said which was followed by their chuckles.

Anne ran inside and looked out of the window to make sure Gilbert was alright. And he was. She was too, because she couldn't think of anything better than his beautiful, breathtaking smile.

"ANNE SHIRLEY-CUTHBERT!" a voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Oh no, Marilla.." she thought, but couldn't help and let herself smile.
