The rose petals trailed smoothly through my fingers and gracefully flowed in the gentle wind that was passing by.
A few strands of hair blew against my face and I looked up at the front porch still to see no one. My first assumption was a prank present from one of my friends. But as I remember it is impossible for any of them to come to my house in a matter of seconds.
My second assumption was my neighbor who had a thing for Mason left it there to get his attention, I could already imagining him shivering in fear as he saw the rose, and will then head straight for some scissors.
Well they do say third time lucky. Standing in a grey hoodie and some jeans I see Lucas appear from behind the wall holding 2 more roses in his hands this time being red ones.
I smile at him and he returns the favour. "You look nice." I say.
"And you look beautiful." He says.
I start to feel my cheeks burn up. Maybe wearing a bit of blusher wasn't such a bad idea.
I look down at the roses and gestures towards them. "They are for..."
"Well this red one is for your mum as a thank you present for driving me there and this other one is for you Lori." He says while handing it to me.
"Why two, I ask. "And not trying to sound rude, I love them, I honestly do. But why is the other red one fake." I ask.
He smiles a bit before taking both my hands with the two roses each in a separate hand. "See here Lori, we have two beautiful roses in your hands. One is soft, gentle and real." He gestures towards the real white rose in my left hand.
"But here." He gestured towards my right hand. "We have a crisp, plastic fake one."
I nod, but not really understanding what he is talking about.
"But when both the roses die is when I will stop caring about you." He says.
I start to feel my heart melt and my lips forcing themselves upwards.
"You really mean that." I say.
"Let the roses speak for themselves." He concludes.
Hm maybe the one and only Lucas Brighten isn't a moment ruiner after all.
All of a sudden my mum comes running towards the door. "Lori have you got it yet." She quickly looks up at Lucas while dusting off some of the flour on her apron. "Hey you must be Lucas." She reaches her hand out towards him and gently shakes it. "It's very nice to meet you."
"It's a pleasure." He says while smiling at her. "Oh and Mrs. Parker this is a thank you present." He hands her the rose.
She slowly takes the rose and brings it her nose. "Thank you Lucas, but you really didn't have to because..."
He cuts her off. "No no I insist."
She smiles awkwardly at the both of us. "Well see, I can't actually take you because your father Lori, is staying at work late tonight and I can't leave Ben, Thalia and Erin on their own."
"You do know there is Mason." I say.
She gave me a flat look. "Never in a million years will I leave Mason in charge of children unless I want to see Ben in the washing machine, Thalia with half her hair shaved off and Erin with another full bucket's worth of water on her head and more importantly the carpet!"
I nod understanding my mum while Lucas looks a little taken back, not used to way our family runs.
"So..." She continues. "Instead of leaving Mason with the kids." Oh no. "He's taking you two."
