A loud bang woke me up as the hook-handed man swung open the door and clapped his hooks together. As I got up, I saw that everybody in the Freaks Caravan were already awake and eating breakfast. "Good morning Isadora, good morning Duncan. I hope you two triplets slept well" smiled Hugo. "Morning" we smiled back. "Ugh" said the hook-handed man when he saw us "anyway, you freaks better put on a good show, cause the boss is in a bad mood. Madame Lulu told him one of the Baudelaire parents are alive". Me and Duncan looked at each other, shocked but happy for our friends. "It's a miracle" said the hook-handed man sarcastically, "now come on orphans". We followed him out the door for a while walking towards the big tent, Beverly & Elliot caught up and started asking the hook-handed man about what happened when Count Olaf visited Madame Lulu earlier that morning, giving me and Duncan a perfect chance to write down everything that would be useful to us and the Baudelaires in our commonplace books.
"Why am I surprised that you two nerdy twins are writing in your nerd books". I looked up and saw Esmé looking down at me and Duncan. "What are you wearing?" I asked, looking at her peculiar outfit, that is too hard to describe except that it was red and yellow and just peculiar. "Don't look at it, I had to make this out of a carnival tent. But look at your outfits, they aren't in at all, ew, you should really change your clothes". "We can't change Esmé because all of our clothes, actually all our things, are most likely still in a broom closet of Prufrock Prep" said Duncan still writing in his commonplace book. "Stop writing in that" said Esmé slamming it onto the floor "now come along we can't have two murderers walking around freely". She took us backstage where the freaks were getting ready for the show.
"Oh hello triplets" said Hugo. "Hello Hugo" we replied. Esmé rolled her eyes "you two twins can sit over there in the corner" she said pointing to the corner of the room "and stay there, I'll be back in a second, my boyfriend got me a new present, wait until you see it, you'll be sick with jealousy". We walked over to the corner and sat down, "do you really think that one of the Baudelaires parents are alive?" I asked Duncan. "Well Jacques did say that there was a survivor of the fire and Madame Lulu did say that one of the Baudelaire parents were alive..." said Duncan. "But?" I continued. "But in the Incomplete History Of Secret Organisations it said that after the schism, many fires were set by the bad side of VFD, killing good VFD members and leaving their children as orphans, so Jacques could have been talking about a different fire and a different set of orphans" he said "and also when I wrote that article about fortune telling I couldn't find any concrete evidence that fortune telling is real". "So Madame Lulu is lying?" I asked. "Maybe, we need to investigate her tent". "And how are we supposed to do that, Count Olaf always either has someone watching us or traps us somewhere that we can't get out". "We just need to wait until we have a chance, wether that is when Count Olaf is distracted or late at night".
Suddenly, Esmé burst into the room with something long and damp in one of her manicured hands "you freaks better put on a show, if not Madame Lulu and my boyfriend said that I can whip you with this tagliatelle grande". "What's a tagliatelle grande?" I asked. "Tagliatelle is a type of Italian noodle" said Elliot who I had seen looking at me through his mirror while me and Duncan were taking. "And grande means big in Italian" Duncan added.
After that, the show started; it consisted of Count Olaf singing the whole way through while the three people in the crowd laughed at the freaks. It was disgusting how people laughed at our friends, "how are we supposed to just sit here when our friends have to go through that embarrassment?" I said. "We just have to" said Duncan "I don't like it either but we can't do anything else".
Following the show, Count Olaf went on another one of his rants about how he had to preform to almost empty houses and make sure orphans don't escape and find other orphans who may not actually be orphans and blah blah blah blah blah. But this time, lucky for us, Count Olaf left kind of happily and left us in the so called care of Esmé Gigi Genevieve Squalor. "But I don't want to look after orphans, orphans are out" she complained while Count Olaf told his troupe to dig a large pit. "Well you will have to look after them, my pet, I need to do go to get something for Madame Lulu and also for me, don't you want me to have full houses when I preform, I simply cannot continue living like this I need to hear the sound of applause. I live for applause and large fortunes and applause". "I know but I simply cannot look after orphans, they are not in, these clothes are not in, carnivals aren't in and don't forget twins are most definitely not in" said Esmé. "We are not twins" I said. "Our brother Quigley died in a fire" said Duncan. "And that makes you twins" said Count Olaf. "Darling, why couldn't you set the fire so their brother didn't die, twins may be out but triplets are in".
"Wait you set the fire?" I breathed. "It was you!" Duncan exclaimed running towards Count Olaf. "Of course I did" said Count Olaf watching the hook-handed man grab Duncan by his collar. "For nerds, you twins aren't very smart" laughed Esmé. "We are not twins!" I screamed before trying to run at Esmé but alike my brother, I was then stopped when the hook-handed man grabbed my collar. "I can't put up with this right now, hookie watch over the twins while I go out to get something and Esmé does whatever she wants, okay?" Count Olaf said storming off with Esmé following close behind. "It's Fernald" whispered the hook-handed man "Great, now we have to watch over the orphans. Right, listen to me and listen very closely, you two will go and sit over there on the stands and stay there, I mean it, stay there" he gave us a sickening smile as me and Duncan walked over to the stands and sat down, the hook-handed man started helping the rest of Count Olaf's troupe to dig a large hole.
After about a minute of silence that felt like forever, Duncan finally said something "it's time" he said. "Time? Time for what?" I asked. "Remember earlier, I said that when the time is right we needed to go and investigate Madame Lulu's tent, that time is now" he said "now come on".
Quietly and stealthily, we made our way past Count Olaf's henchmen, out of the tent, past the arguing Olaf and Esmé and into Madame Lulu's tent, "hello?" I asked making sure nobody was there and luckily nobody was. "Good, nobody's here" said Duncan. "So what now?". "Let's look in this room first". "But we were in here the other night, we should look in the room with Madame Lulu's crystal ball" I said. "But last night, we weren't looking for anything" said Duncan. "Then let's start".
5 minuets later, we were still searching in the first room of Madame Lulu's tent when into the room burst Chabo, Beverly & Elliot.
"Quagmires!" shouted Elliot "everybody's looking for you". "Exactly" I said "so stay quiet and tell nobody we are here". "Of course we won't tell anyone" said Beverly. "Good why are you all in here?".
"No reason, you should really go back" said Beverly. "Okay let's go, come on Isadora" said my brother. "But.." I said. "Let's go" he pulled me out of the room. But just outside, Count Olaf's henchmen were looking for us. "This way" I said dragging Duncan behind Madame Lulu's tent. "There is something up with those three, I think we've seen them before" I said. "I know me too but we need to focus on what we are doing now, not what has happened in-"
"My oh my what are you two doing back here".
"Esmé"
